I twist to face him, “Ah? What is with the ah? There is no ah.”

Jonathan ignores me and talks over my head to Tori. “I see it.”

“See what?” I demand.

“Worry Face,” he says but still keeps his focus on Tori. “We haven’t seen Worry Face in what, five years?”

“At least.”

“What’s up with this guy? What does she even see in him?”

“You guys know I’m right here, right? I can hear you.”

They look at me, then go back to their conversation.

“I have no idea, he’s the literal worst.”

“Obviously. So what are we going to do about it?”

“I’ve been trying to come up with something for months, but nothing. I finally figured that he would ruin it all on his own.”

“Which he clearly has.”

“Hello!” I wave my hands between them, “Remember me?”

“Hi, honey,” Tori takes my hand and holds it in hers. “We see you, but do you mind keeping it down? We’re having a conversation.”

I growl in frustration. “I already have parents. I don’t need you two to parent me.”

Jonathan takes me by the shoulders and turns me to face him. “Let me say this one thing and then we will stop.”

“Fine,” I concede.

“I’m guessing that you and Denham had a fight, I’ll figure what that’s all about later, and then when he didn’t talk to you, you were up pacing all night in your room.” He looks at Tori. “Which explains the tired comment.” He looks back at me. “Then you decided this morning that you would talk to Norah because she’s your mom and because she has a special way of putting things into perspective.” He takes a breath before continuing. “And then after everyone showed up and Denham still didn’t come out of his room, this new perspective has given you Worry Face.”

I’m speechless. How did he just do that?

Tori lays her head on my shoulder while she hugs me. “We know you, Mills. This isn’t you.”

My eyes are brimming with tears, but they don’t fall just yet. I haven’t taken my eyes off of Jonathan. “I thought you liked him.”

Jonathan gives a short laugh. “I hate him.”

Tori holds back a laugh, resulting in a snort.

Jonathan continues, “I kind of figured things would fizzle out, and we would all move on and pretend he had never existed.”

“One cannot ignore the existence of Denham Narcissus Muller VI.”

I roll my eyes at Tori. “That isn’t his name and you know it.”

Tori shrugs. “But it sounds so much better that way.”

She’s ridiculous, but it does the job and I’m laughing.

“There’s our girl,” Jonathan says and pulls me into a hug.

Tori joins in. “Yep. Just needed my partner in crime to finally get through to her.” I hear them high-five above my head.
