“I didn’t see you for one day.” She blushes. “I missed you too.”

The timer dings.

“Dinner’s ready.” I ever-so slowly move Millie’s legs from my lap, gliding my hands over the smooth skin as I do.

“I still can’t believe you wouldn’t let me help,” she protests.

“It’s a frozen lasagna. Even I can handle that.”

“I recall you once ruining Top Ramen.”

“That was fifteen years ago! And way more steps!”

She rolls her eyes. “Fill pot with water. Boil water. Put in styrofoam. Cook. Add provided salt packet.”

“See. More steps.” I pull the lasagna out of the oven. Parts of the cheese on top are burnt, and the center is still ice cold. I don’t know what else to do. I push it back into the oven.

Millie snorts out a laugh. I narrow my eyes at her.

“Don’t you dare.” I head towards her.

“No!” Millie tries to run, but my island blocks her only escape route. I grab her, throwing her over my shoulder. She shrieks as I tackle her to the couch and start tickling her.

“Stop!” She gasps between bouts of laughter. “I concede!”

We sit there just staring at each other for a long moment. My eyes fall down to her full pink lips and back to her eyes. As I start to lean in closer, I pause. Is there anything that could possibly stop this from happening this time?

No sprinklers. Check.

No brothers. Double check.

We are completely alone.

I gulp as I lean my head closer to her’s. Before I can close the gap, Millie’s hand is clutching my shirt while her other one grabs my neck pulling me into her. Our mouths crash together. Slow and timid at first. Then, with a surge of urgency, I can’t help but deepen the kiss. Millie’s hand is in my hair pulling me closer and closer, yet nothing feels close enough. My hands roam down her back to her hips. This moment is everything we have been building towards. It’s years of waiting and longing for the right time.

I’m completely lost in this kiss when the fire alarm starts going off. I groan as I pull myself away. Ending the kiss. “Seriously!”

Millie takes a couple shallow breaths then starts laughing uncontrollably. I go into the kitchen and pull a now completely charred lasagna out of the oven. I sigh as I plop it straight into the sink. Why is cooking so hard?

Millie comes behind me and wraps her arms around my waist. “What do you want on your pizza?”

I turn to face her, putting my arms around her. I lean down and give her a light peck on the cheek before resting my chin on her head. She starts laughing again, and before I know it, I’m laughing harder than I have ever laughed in my entire life. My whole body is convulsing with deep, guttural laughs. I wipe my eyes. As I shift our bodies so that we are standing side by side, I put my arm around her and pull out my phone.

“I don’t care. You choose. Anything. As long as—”

“It doesn’t have olives or mushrooms,” Millie finishes. “I know. I was watching, remember? I’m watching you, Wazowski, always watching.”

I look at her in confusion.

“Monsters, Inc.”

I shrug.

“You’ve never seen Monsters, Inc.?”

“No,” I say, still not sure what is happening.

She shoves my phone back at me. “You order the pizza. We’re fixing this. I can’t believe you’ve never seen Monsters, Inc.!”
