Chapter 24

Millie

Ipark my car in my usual spot in the parking garage. Mark is waiting for me, leaning against his car. He walks over and opens my door for me, helping me out. His eyes roam over me. I’m suddenly very self-conscious of my form-fitting dress. His Adam’s apple bobs up and down, and I have to stop every impulsive thought of grabbing and pulling him towards me. The same fight is evident in his eyes.

“Wow. You look—”

“You don’t look too bad yourself.”

“I think pink is my new favorite color.”

My blush no doubt matches the color of my dress.

Mark pulls me into him, leaning down to give me the lightest kiss. It’s barely a peck and yet it sends fire down to my toes.

“We should probably head in there,” he whispers in my ear, making it way too hard to concentrate on what he’s saying. I’m pretty sure that man carries every ounce of oxygen I need for survival. All I’d need to do is pull his mouth down to mine, you know, for survival purposes. Not because I want to kiss him or anything. This is purely a biological need.

“Mm-hm.”

He gives a soft chuckle. “Come on.”

The elevator seems to be taking forever today. I hit the button for the tenth time when Mark suggests taking the stairs. I groan. I did not wear the shoes for the stairwell. I look longingly at the elevator one more time before agreeing. He pulls me towards the door as I reluctantly follow. We take our time climbing the flights. Partly so we (Read: me. Mark clearly puts time in at the gym. I, however, do not.) don’t show up to work all sweaty and gross. But mostly it’s the perfect excuse to spend some more time together this morning.

Finally making it to the third floor, I’m about to open the door to our hallway when Mark gives my hand a tug and pulls me towards the opposite wall. He pulls me into him and covers my mouth with his. My hands trail up his chest and up his neck. He groans as my fingers find the hair at the nape. His hands are at my waist pulling me in closer, and he deepens the kiss. My breath catches as he moves his attention to trailing kisses along my jaw and down my neck.

I freeze when I hear a door somewhere below us open. Mark protests as I push him away.

“Did you hear that?”

His breath is hot on my skin as he catches his breath. “Hear what?”

Someone is climbing up the steps.

I look at Mark. “That.”

He groans again as he pulls us back towards the door. I stop him one last time before he can pull the handle and give him a quick kiss. “Meet me for lunch?”

“Of course.” He kisses me again. “Especially if there is more of that.”

“Maybe.” I give him a wink then open the door into the hallway that separates our offices.

Ashleigh: The girls have been begging to go to the beach. Want to join in?

Millie: Of course! I’ll bring the s’mores supplies.

Ashtyn’s and Austyn’s bright orange and yellow swimsuits make it easy to find Danny and Ashleigh when I arrive at the fire pits. I managed to get here early enough that I have plenty of time to play with the girls before it gets too dark and cool.

“Hey, sis. Glad you could make it.” My brother pulls me into a big bear hug.

“Thanks for the invite.”

“Aunt Millie!” The twins shout in unison as they run up and tackle me, making the three of us fall into a heap in the sand.

“Girls! Give her a moment!” Ashleigh isn’t even trying to hide her laugh. I grin over at her.

“At least this time there was sand.” I stand up and dust off as I remove my coverup.

“Cute suit! Is it new?”
