“Millie, wait!” I start after her, not sure what I’m doing. “Hold up,” I grab her arm and turn her around, but she won’t look me in the face. “Why did you bring me cookies?”

“I told you. I made a lot, so I thought you’d like some.”

“But why did you bring them over? Now?”

“Because cookies are best when they are fresh.”

“Cookies are best when they are fresh, and you made a lot of them, so you naturally decided to get my address, something you didn’t have, from my sister?”

“Hmm-hmm.” She nods.

“Why are you here, Millie?”

She finally looks up at me. “You know why.”

“I’m not sure I do.” I fold my arms across my chest.

“Yes, you do.” Her voice is cracking.

“Just say it then.” It comes out almost as a plea.

“I can’t,” she whispers.

I can’t take it any longer. Her big blue eyes, brimming with tears. Seeing her makes it clear to me. Every complication is worth it. Who cares what any brother or best friend thinks? I need this woman in my life. And not as my friend. My hand slowly moves a piece of hair from her face and puts it behind her ear. My hand cups her face, and I place my forehead on hers.

“I want this. I want us.”

“Me too.”

My other hand starts tracing circles on her shoulder. Our eyes lock. My lips part. I start to close the gap. Millie yelps and jumps out of my embrace as the sprinklers go off. Of all the times! We are both soaking wet. Millie starts laughing uncontrollably; I start laughing too. Leaning my forehead to hers again, I trace her jaw with my thumb. I pull her into me.

“Come inside, let me get you a towel to dry off.”

“It’s okay.” She pulls away to look up at me. I eye her skeptically. “I really need to get going.”

“Fine.” I run my hands up and down her arms. “What are you doing tomorrow night?”

“Nothing.”

“Dinner? 7:00?” I take her hands in mine, interlocking our fingers.

“Mark Winters, are you asking me out on a date?”

“You bet your cute butt I am.”

“See, I knew you were checking out my butt the other day!” Her smile lights up her whole face.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, you caught me. So what do you say?” I grin back.

“I say, yes.” She squeezes my fingers. “I would love to go to dinner with you tomorrow night.”

She turns to dashes off to her car, but I pull her back into me giving her a hug and kiss her on the top of the head.

After drying off and changing my clothes, I crash into bed completely exhausted from the last few days but smiling like a fool.
