“Yes,” I sigh. “The lawyer is Mark.”

“I knew it! I knew there was something going on there!”

“There’s nothing going on!”

“But you want there to be.” She’s not asking me.

“No, I don’t!” I protest.

Ashleigh gives me a sideways glance. “Then why do you want him to notice you?”

“Because he still thinks of me as a little kid, and I’m not. He needs to understand that I am a grown woman who can make her own decisions.”

“So you want him to notice you but not notice you?”

“Precisely!”

“Girl, you’ve got it bad!”

Chapter 12

Mark

I’m sitting at my desk staring at those stupid pink shoes. I should just man up and take them across the hall. It’s early enough she might not even be in yet. I could just put them on her desk. Wouldn’t even have to say a word. Just returning these shoes you projected at my face. Then we wouldn’t have to be awkward when we see each other again. IF we ever see each other again. I’m pretty sure Millie is a professional avoider. If she doesn’t want to see me, she’s not going to see me.

“You seemed to be having a good time on Saturday.” Nancy gives me an approving look.

Saturday night had been better than I had expected it to be. Until it wasn’t. I still don’t understand what I did wrong. I have two pink shoes sitting in my office that are proof that I did something. When I told Rosie about what happened (the CliffsNotes version—I don’t need her thinking I have feelings for Millie. I most certainly do not. Mostly.), it was a good thing that she was two hours away because if she could, she would have thrown more shoes at me. When I asked what I did wrong, she didn’t make any more sense than Millie had. I still have no idea what I did.

“It was fine. I never got a chance to come over and say hi. Did you and your husband have a good time?”

“We did.” Nancy smiles. “We usually just make an appearance. My Marty isn’t much for big parties. He gets all nervous around people he doesn’t know, but he goes for me.”

“Marty sounds like my kind of man.”

“Oh! You two would get along splendidly! We will have to have you over for dinner sometime!”

I smile at her enthusiasm.

“I did see you and our girl getting awfully cozy over at a table.” Nancy winks at me.

“We weren’t cozy,” I protest. “It was just drinks between friends.”

“Umm-hmm.”

“It was! We needed to clear the air, and then we people watched.”

“Honey, I may be old enough to be your mother, but I’m not that out of touch with reality. You two couldn’t take your eyes off of each other. Three different women came walking past your table, and you didn’t even notice them.”

I try to think back. “No one came by our table all night.”

“If you say so.” Nancy winks again.

“There is nothing going on there. There never will be. Millie made that very clear.” Might as well tell her the truth since she seems to have a sixth sense about my feelings.

“You sound disappointed.”

I shrug. “I don’t know. Her reasons make sense.”
