What’s up with him?

“I could ask you the same thing,” Roman deflects.

I don’t let him get away with it.

… Even if there are other places I want to be.

Sophia is still locked up. And there’s very little in this world I want more right now than to get back and fuck her again. But my mind is still whirling from today’s events. I need something to anchor it down.

I need someone to concentrate on other than the girl who turns me upside down.

“Really, Roman. I know we still don’t know each other as well as we should, but we’re brothers. You can tell me what’s happening. Good or bad.”

Looking back over his shoulder, as if checking to make sure no one is eavesdropping, Roman stalls, hesitating to respond. I can sense a fight playing out behind those green eyes.

“… It’s good,” he finally says, looking back towards me.

“Then let me hear it.”

“Ride with me, I’ll drive you back to the brownstone and tell you what I can.”

It doesn’t take much more to convince me. Taking out my phone, I text Ray.

I’m getting a ride with Roman. Take my car with you when you leave.

Maksim should have been here too, but we had to keep our party small. The Irishman is being groomed by his bosses for a bigger roll, and he came with them to learn the finer side of this business—about the legitimate side of it all.

The Kilpatrick boys were probably planning the whole trip here. To them, this meeting was about a whole lot more than just how to handle the Greek problem.

Aiden Kilpatrick appears to be preparing for a mayoral run. That’s why he’s staying behind at the senator’s house with Ray and his brothers. To schmooze a potential political ally, and assure him that a partnership can be mutually beneficial.

Roman and I aren’t interested in such things. We’re both content to stick to the underworld… for now.

So, when the conversation turned political, we both decided it was time for us to leave.

For Roman, I’m sure it was because he was getting bored. For me, though, it was more about getting out of there before the subject turned to Sophia.

No. It wouldn’t have gone in that direction. The senator doesn’t even know who blew up the two buildings yet, and there’s no way any one of us was going to tell him.

The longer we can keep our connection to this chaos under wraps, the better. And that might buy me just enough time to figure out what I’m going to do when they come after my captive.

“Where to?” Roman asks, after I’ve slammed shut the passenger door to his black truck.

“The brownstone,” I quickly respond. There’s no doubt in my mind that it’s where I belong right now. With her…

“I’ll take the long way there,” Roman nods. “Just to make sure we aren’t being followed.”

Starting the car, he peels around the horseshoe driveaway, and we take off into the night.

For a while, we just drive in silence, but when we turn into some traffic and slow to a near stop, I can’t help it anymore.

“So, what’s your good news?” I ask. Just as I do, a droplet of rain falls on the windshield. It’s quickly followed by another.

Roman’s grip visibly tightens around the steering wheel. Whatever the good news is, he doesn’t seem eager to say it out loud.

“… Mary’s pregnant.”

I hardly have time to process what he just said before it suddenly starts to pour. The streetlights outside blur as the car is drenched.
