Checking my phone, I note the time. Fuck. I’m already running late, and I still need to shower.

“I shouldn’t be long,” I say. It’s wishful thinking. But I don’t just want to come to fuck her again. There’s something about this new Sophia that’s already growing on me. Maybe she’s not just a hot miserable mess. Maybe there’s something more to her…

“Yeah, whatever…” she mumbles, eyes still trained on her pile of books.

That’s how I leave her.

Marching through the doorway, I go to shut her bedroom door, but before I can manage it, she jumps around.

“Wait!”

I can’t help but roll my eyes.

“What?”

She seems to snap out of it before she can say something stupid, something she might regret. “Never mind… just, thank you.”

“You’re welcome, princess,” I tease. Then, with an emphatic push, I slam the door shut, making sure to loudly lock it behind me.

I curse myself for letting a simple act of kindness get in the way of my work as I rush to get ready. A man like me should never rush, but I barely have time for a shower.

Still, the more I try to convince myself that I did the wrong thing, the harder it becomes.

Sophia seemed genuinely happy. She seemed truly excited.

That positive energy wafting off of her was almost as intoxicating as her cunt.

Fuck.

A heavy stone grows in my gut as I slip on a suit and make my way to the garage.

I’m about to meet with the only group of people in this entire world whose opinions I actually care about. My siblings. My allies. My friends.

And they’re going to try and convince me to give Sophia up.

I can’t let that happen.

“That went well… even if you were late,” Roman teases, as we exit the stately manner.

“Maybe I’d have been on time if a certain brother had bothered to check up on me earlier…” I reply, undoing the top button on my dress shirt. The air is heavy and humid. I can feel a storm coming.

“Oh, you want me checking up on you, now?”

I can only chuckle as one of the senator’s servants opens the driver’s door on my car for me.

“What’s been going on with you?” I ask, not quite ready to leave just yet.

There’s so much going on, a year’s worth of shit has been stuffed into today alone. First, the bomb. Then, the sex. Now, this.

It’s not over, either.

There’s something going on with my brother.

Ray told Roman that I’d nearly been crushed under a pile of rubble at the library, and Roman hadn’t even thought to call our sister, let alone me.
