For a moment, neither of us move or even react. All I can do is stare at the handsome beast who stole my last bit of remaining innocence with his tongue… and then strangely just gave it back with his lips… with a kiss.

There’s no anger in Leonid’s eyes, only a strange type of concern. But is it for me, or is it for himself?

He doesn’t stick around for long enough to give me an answer.

In the blink of an eye, Leonid is marching towards the bedroom door.

Stopping just as his hand falls onto the handle, he looks back at me, blue eyes twinkling with something I don’t quite recognize.

Who are you?

Leonid’s mouth is twisted downwards in a frown, and his lips open for a moment, like he’s about to say something. But then he thinks better of it.

Without saying another word, he turns his back on me.

Opening the door, he steps outside, and then softly shuts it behind him.

When I hear the click of the lock, my heart sinks through the floor, and reality comes rushing back over me.

What the hell is happening?

It’s been two days since I kissed her.

Two days since I couldn’t help myself. Two days since I last spoke to her. Two days since I’ve even been strong enough to visit her again.

Fuck. I’m such a coward.

No. You’re an idiot!

What the hell is wrong with me?

It’s been forty-eight hours since I kissed my mortal enemy. Sophia Xiphias. My captured princess. And still, I don’t have a good answer for that question.

Something just came over me. Something I’d never felt before.

It wasn’t just lust from seeing her in that kinky lingerie. It wasn’t just pity from watching her fire fade against some made-up insecurity. It wasn’t just a power play or a game.

It was something else. Something that appeared deep in my soul and slithered upwards until there was nowhere for it to go but out… and towards her.

I can still taste her lips on my lips. I can still feel how she started to kiss me back before I pulled away and ran off like a cowardly lion.

Wiping a hand down my face, I try to brush away Sophia’s scent. But it’s impossible. So, instead, I decide to once again try and replace it with the metallic flavor of blood.

“Let’s go back to the docks today,” I say, gazing out of the passenger window of the range rover Ray drives down the freeway.

“Why?”

“Because we didn’t create enough chaos yesterday.”

Ever since I left Sophia to waste away in my brownstone, I’ve been out trying to distract myself. The past forty-eight hours have been hectic.

“You’re being reckless, kid,” Ray says, smacking his lips and shaking his head. “I don’t know what is going on with you, but I’d like to live to see another day.”

“Those fuckers couldn’t kill us if they tried,” I sneer.
