“I’ve tried,” Ray heaves. “I can’t get a hold of half of them.”

“We were expecting you to break your promises,” the Greek fuck taunts as my blade presses closer to his throat.

“I didn’t promise shit,” I growl.

“And neither did we…” he spits. “Kill the girl!”

“No!”

I don’t even think. A desperate burst of rage-fueled adrenaline explodes through my body as I slit the fuckers throat. But it’s too late. His orders were loud and clear, and we’re directly within rage of all the men he’s set up around this side of the dock.

Instantly, a hail of gunfire descends upon me.

All I can do to keep from being shredded to bits is hit the ground and cover myself with this human shield.

But that’s not going to do much, not for long. Bullets dig into his body as I try to think of a way out of this. Anything.

I need to see her again.

… But that same burning desire is what got me into this mess in the first place. I moved too quickly, acted too carelessly.

And now she might already be dead.

Fuck.

… Maybe I’ll see her in hell. Though, I doubt it. An angel like that doesn’t belong in such a place, no matter how fiery she lived.

A deep regret sinks in through my chest, corrupting my heart as the force of the bullets get more impactful. My human shield won’t last much longer.

This is it.

Closing my eyes, I think of Sophia. She’s the last thing I want on my mind before it’s blown to bits.

And then, suddenly, the bullets stop.

… Well, that’s not true. I can still hear gunshots exploding through the night air. But I don’t feel the bullets anymore.

Am I dead?

“Enedra!”

More shouts of enedra follow that first one, rising up through the storm of gunfire as the shots are turned away from me.

I know just enough Greek to understand what that word means.

Ambush.

My assassins must have finally arrived.

Throwing the shredded corpse off of me, I rip out my Glock and start looking to help. There must be a chance that Sophia is still alive, I just need to find someone who will be able to tell me where she is.

My heart pounds like a jack hammer as I rush towards the floodlights surrounding me. But it’s impossible to tell who’s who. Everybody just looks like shadows.

… And then, I hear a familiar voice.

“Does anyone have eyes on Retsos?”

No. It couldn’t be.
