So, instead, I deflect.

“Do you?” I ask.

“I could care less if she dies,” the man shrugs. “In fact, it’s probably better if she does.”

The callous disregard for Sophia’s life finally makes me snap. Somehow, I manage not to reach for any of my weapons, but I still cock my fist back and lunge forward, ready to clock this bastard right between the eyes.

Before I can connect, though, the slimy fucker rips out his gun and points it directly at my forehead.

I’m close enough that I can feel the cold steel against my skin. It snaps me back to reality.

Fuck. What am I doing?

“Who are you?” I sneer, keeping my fist raised.

“My name doesn’t matter,” the man spits. “I work for the untouchable.”

“Retsos,” I growl.

“The one and only.”

Suddenly, a static hiss crackles over my earpiece and I can hear what sounds like Maksim cursing.

“They got me, boss. One of these Greek bastards snuck up behind me and—”

“Shut the fuck up!” an unfamiliar voice shouts, and the line goes dead.

Fuck.

The Greek stranger must be close enough to me that he hears the commotion that just erupted in my ear, because a new smirk twists his mangled face as he unlocks the safety on his gun.

“I thought we made it clear that you were to come alone,” he says, almost like he’s happy that he’ll get to kill me now.

“I thought I made it clear that I’m not someone to fuck with…” A burst of anger propels me as I lower my cocked fist, punching the stranger’s gun aside just as I jump in the other direction.

A single gunshot erupts from his muzzle, harmlessly hitting the cement below as I slip around him and unsheathe my knife.

“You bastard…” he grumbles, as I press my blade against his throat from behind.

“You got too close,” I growl, ready to cut him from ear to ear. But I can’t do that yet. First, I need answers. “Where is—”

Before I can ask where Sophia is, a blinding row of lights flash on all around me.

Even if I suddenly can’t see shit, it instantly becomes clear that I’m surrounded.

My stomach drops. I fucked up.

“Ray are you still there?” I ask, keeping my blade pressed against the Greek’s throat.

A static hiss greets me in response, and I’m about to give up hope before I finally hear a familiar voice come over the airways.

“Yeah, but I’m in no position to protect your ass,” he says, his words coming out rushed. Fucking hell. It sounds like he’s running. “They have at least three fuckers trying to chase me down.”

Shit. This is going to get ugly.

Sophia…

“Send in the back-up!” I rumble.
