But as time passed without any update, I started to lose hope. Leo isn’t some knight in shining armor, or some fabled prince charming. He’s real. He’s complicated. And he’s part of a world where a man claims what’s his and then he never even thinks of sharing it.

So, why would he ever risk his own life to bring Castor back to me? It wouldn’t make any sense.

But that’s what Leo does. He turns me upside down. Shakes me by the ankles and makes me beg for more. He makes me that foolish little girl again, ditzy with a head full of fairy dust.

Nothing ever fully makes sense when I’m around Leo Barinov.

“A gift…” I mutter, unsure of what to think.

“That’s right,” Leo whispers, kissing me on the forehead. “A gift. A gift that will change everything.”

A lump catches in my throat.

What does that mean?

“… Do you want everything to change?” I ask, almost afraid too.

Do I want everything to change?

“No,” Leo answers, hardly even hesitating. “I want to be stuck here with you forever, locked away from the world, suspended in time. But I know better. And it’s why I went out and got you this gift. Change is the only way forward, Sophia. Think of how we started this journey. Think of where we are now. Would either of our lives be better if we hadn’t changed?”

A stone drops in my gut as I try to imagine being stuck beneath Retsos for all of this time. Back then, I had no one to fight for me. I was so alone, and I couldn’t see a way out of my darkness. The future was black and cold. Change felt impossible. I was at someone else’s mercy.

But now…

Now, everything is different. And if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that Leo will fight for me. He’ll kill for me.

…. Hell, I’m starting to think he might even die for me.

No. He wouldn’t. Fighting is in his blood. Dying is not. He hasn’t changed that much. And neither have you.

“No. I’m glad things changed,” I quietly confess, sinking deeper into his body. “But I don’t know how much more change I can stand.”

“Not much more, princess. Not much more… I promise.”

At that, Leo pushes me down onto the bed and slowly crawls on top of me. Immediately, I’m his.

Fuck. I missed him so much. And he wasn’t even gone for long.

“What else do you promise?” I ask, as his lips find my neck.

“I promise that I’ll never let you go,” he says, his tongue coming out to paint the tender flesh around my throat. “I promise to kill anyone who even tries to rip you away from me.”

“What if they just want what’s best for you?” I ask, my back arching into him. “What if your family tries to take me away, because they know it will save your life?”

Despite the pleasure tingling down my skin and into my core, a swirling tornado of conflict has taken root in my mind.

Suddenly, I’m worried that Leo might have actually gotten Castor for me.

That would change everything.

And I’m not sure I want everything to change so drastically.

Not when Leo kisses me like this.

“My life isn’t theirs to save,” Leo says, his hands wrapping around the collar of my long t-shirt. “And I’ll make sure they know it. You aren’t going anywhere, Sophia.”

Tearing my shirt down the middle, Leo uncovers my breasts. But unlike he has before, he doesn’t immediately cover them with his mouth. Instead, the wild look in his eyes pauses and he stares down at my exposed body like a predator who just stumbled upon a fawn.
