Now, though, this bedroom has almost become a haven. A place to retreat to. A place to wait. A place where Leo and I are… well, whatever we are.

And whatever that is, it makes my heart flutter as he gets closer. His earthy scent wraps around me, and my fingers get weak enough that I drop the book I’ve been lost in ever since he left me alone on the rooftop patio.

“It’s a beautiful book,” I admit, letting it fall as I steer my attention to something even more frustratingly beautiful.

“At least we agree on one thing,” Leo sighs, sitting on the edge of the bed.

The entire mattress sinks under his weight, and I’m pulled towards him.

“I think we’ve found that we agree on more than just the beauty of your mother’s book,” I say.

His tense muscles relax as I rub up next to his broad shoulder. “Like what?”

My mind swirls as I think back to all that we’ve already shared. How long has it been since I was brought here? It’s hard to say. Everything is a blur. Instead of images and facts, my memory is filled with emotions and feelings, both good and bad.

“… We agree that taking innocent lives is never the right thing to do,” I say, ignoring all of those emotions and feelings, no matter how much I want to dive head first into them.

What happened to me?

I used to be so straightforward. My mind was forged to be a shield, a weapon, a threat. But now, a fight is the last thing I want. Hate is so far from my mind.

Love has taken over.

Fuck. Is it really love?

Or am I just being taken over by the starved little girl who believed in charming princes and fairy tales?

“What else do we agree on?” Leo asks, shifting over so that we are face to face.

“We agree on the fact that Retsos is a rat bastard.”

Leo chuckles, his voice deep and rumbling as he pinches my chin. “I thought we agreed that you would never talk about other men in our bed.”

“I didn’t know you thought of Retsos as a man.”

The kiss he gives me in return for my quip tells me all I need to know.

We’re on the same page, princess.

Still, his lips can’t answer all of my questions, not unless words come out of them.

“… Where were you?” I ask after our kiss has ended.

“It doesn’t matter,” Leo deflects. “All that matters is that I’m back.”

“It does matter…” I whisper, remembering how I once felt so weak because I asked him to promise me that he would return. “It matters to me.”

“I’ll tell you in the morning, Sophia,” Leo says, his big hand sliding up my jaw until he cups my face like it’s the most fragile object in the world. “I have a present for you.”

My heart flickers against his words.

When Leo left me sitting on the rooftop, I thought he might be off to do something gallant. Something for me, and me only.

It was why I was almost glad to see him go.

Was he going out into the darkness to prove himself to me? Was he going out to do something I never would have dared expect him to do? To rescue the only other person in this world I give two shits about?

When I fell asleep that night, it was to dreams of waking up in a world where I was flanked by Leo and Castor. My two protectors, working side by side, for my sake.
