“Only some words of encouragement. If anyone can find a weak spot in the Greek defences, it’s Maksim. If anyone can break through that weak spot, it’s you.”

A sneer comes over my face as I think about sneaking back into the belly of the beast. “Good luck with the Italians,” I say. “I’ll keep you updated on Castor.”

Our call ends without further ceremony, and I immediately start marching up to my second bedroom.

For the past three days, I’ve been spending every night with Sophia, but I still keep my clothes in a separate room—they cover the safe I store my weapons in.

Opening a suitcase, I start packing for my inevitable trip.

Maksim will find a way in, I have no doubt. Then, it’s going to be up to me to take my princess’ most important pawn.

If I can do that, there won’t be anything left standing between me and what I want.

… But what do I want?

Her.

Then just marry her, you idiot!

No. That won’t solve anything. Sophia is not convinced that her men would follow someone else’s queen, especially when that someone else kidnapped that queen from right under their noses.

And even if she was sure that they would follow the both of us, she knows that the second she has all of the power, Retsos will get reckless. That’s bad news for Castor. And Sophia is not willing to do anything that might put her old friend in danger.

It’s frustrating. Especially when I remember how she reacted to me at that crumbling mansion in the bayou. She did all she could to keep our marriage from happening, despite the fact that Retsos was already threatening Castor.

Was she thinking about her friend then?

… Or was she overcome by the same strange sensation as me?

Maybe we both just turn each other on our heads.

If we were ordinary people, that wouldn’t be so bad. But we control empires, and the fates of thousands rely on us putting things right.

That means it’s up to us to keep the world from turning upside down, too. If we fail, then everyone we know will drown in blood.

My friends. My family.

My princess.

I can’t let that happen. I won’t let it happen.

I’ll go back into the belly of the beast, and I’ll come out with the only thing keeping me from fully possessing Sophia’s heart.

Castor Manolas.

That pawn will be freed of his Greek shackles, I’ll make sure of it.

… But that doesn’t mean I won’t keep him in some shackles of my own.

She’s mine, old man. And before I give you any taste of freedom, I’m going to make sure you understand that.

Sophia

“You’re leaving again…”

So much has changed since the last time Leonid left me locked up in this place. Hell, once in a while, I almost forget that I’m a captive here.
