“Then the men at the front would grab you,” Maeve responds, her lips tightening into a soft smile. “And Mr. Barinov would be very angry.”

“Why? Because I tried to escape.”

The little old maid shakes her head. “No. Wanting to escape is just human nature. He’d be furious because another man would have touched you. I’ve seen this type of thing many times in my life, dear. These mafia men are as possessive as the devil himself, but that doesn’t mean they’re as callous.”

“He is callous,” I huff, crossing my arms. He said he’d be right back, and now I’ve been alone and hungry for over a fucking day.

“Maybe so, but look carefully for a softer touch, Sophia. If you feel it, understand that it’s something special. These men don’t just open up to anybody.”

Maeve gives me one last gentle smile before checking on my tray of food. When she’s satisfied that everything is in order, she turns and shuffles towards the door.

But even after she locks me back into my cage, her words stay behind, wrapping around my chest like a banner of smoke.

These men don’t just open up to anybody.

For some reason, all I can think about is when Leonid told me about his limp. The limp that I hadn’t even noticed until he brought it up.

He opened up to me. Even if only for the tiniest moment.

… Does that mean he actually gives a shit?

A warm shiver runs over my skin, and I instinctively go to hug myself.

This is getting too complicated. Too fucking dangerous.

Because if my captor is really starting to care for me, then what the fuck is going to stop me from caring for him?

Fuck.

I really am losing my mind.

Leo

“Where are you?”

Roman’s voice crackles over my earpiece as I quietly stalk over the rooftops opposite my destination.

“You know exactly where I am.”

“Fuck. Leo, I thought we agreed to wait at least another day…”

“I’m done waiting.”

It’s been two days since I’ve been back to the brownstone. Two days since Roman and I massacred that pathetic team of Greeks who had dared try to follow us.

It wasn’t even close. Roman and I are two of the most feared assassins in the underworld and we showed those fuckers why. Outnumbered or not, we laid waste to our pursuers.

We never even thought of running. But when it was over, we knew we had to get out of there. After the initial blood bath, we overheard a call come over one of their radios. Back up was on the way. So where the cops.

There was no point in dying on that hill, drenched in blood and rain water. We left. But we couldn’t be sure we weren’t still somehow being followed.

So, neither of us could go where we wanted.

It was infuriating. Two long days in hideout. I shouldn’t be afraid of the Greeks. They should be afraid of me.

Still, I knew that it wasn’t me who I was protecting.
