“No!” I choke, the anger inside of me battling against every other emotion. “Where have you been?”

“I’m so sorry, dear. When I got the message, I was already out of the city tending to some personal matters. I came as quickly as possible.”

“Message?”

“Yes, Mr. Barinov texted me. He’s a demanding master. Ever since Mr. Byrne and Mr. Kilpatrick offered my services to him, I can’t seem to catch my breath.”

“Tell me about it,” I huff, my rage carefully settling in the face of some sympathy. Maeve isn’t who I should be mad at.

He is.

“How long have I been locked up here for?” I ask, as she places the veritable buffet onto my nightstand.

“Do you mean since the beginning, or since I last left?”

“… Since you last left.”

“Just over a day.”

So, it only takes twenty-four hours for me to nearly lose my mind.

Fuck. The revelation is hardly comforting.

“Why?” I ask. “Why was I left locked up with no food for a day? Did I do something wrong?”

Maeve purses her lips, a look of concern coming over her experienced face.

“I’m sure he’ll explain,” she softly assures me.

“So, he’ll be back?”

“I hope so,” Maeve nods, more solemnly than I was expecting.

“… Is he alright?” I hear myself ask. My heart is tied into a knot. I shouldn’t care this much about my captor’s well-being. But I can’t help it. The fucker has forced his way inside of me.

“These men never are,” Maeve responds. “But yes. He’s fine. Something came up, and he couldn’t come straight back here.”

A strange sense of relief washes over my sore body. Alright, so he’s not hurt or dead, and I’m not being tested or tortured.

Then what happened? What did I do to deserve this hell?

“When will he return?” I ask, my voice growing softer as I try to carry the weight of all my questions.

“Hopefully soon. I do enjoy tending to you, dear, but I have other duties to attend to as well.”

Just like that, the rage returns. It’s only a small little flame, but it still flickers like an angry candle.

“You enjoy tending to me?”

“That’s right.”

“… Do you know that I’m being held here against my will?”

“I do,” Maeve nods, not missing a beat.

Her casual admittance is almost enough to throw me off guard.

“And what if I pushed you to the floor and raced out of here?”
