And that is when I went to his house and killed him.

We fought first, until he was a bloodied mess, and then with the last hit, he fell back and knocked his head on the tiles. He died quickly, and I wish it wasn’t the case, but fate took it out of my hands. It was hard getting rid of his body, I have to admit. But I did what I needed to and covered my tracks. I burned the body, and there are no traces of him remaining.

When my mother got out of the hospital, she didn’t know what had happened, but I told her Robert had left and I hadn’t seen him. I told her that maybe he went to visit his firstborn son from another woman, Tatum, who he rarely saw. I don’t know if she’s aware of the truth, but I think that deep down inside she does, because she hasn’t been looking over her shoulder waiting for his return.

She knows he isn’t coming back to hurt anyone ever again. I made sure of that. “Okay, well, I haven’t seen him in years. We all assumed he went to stay with family out east,” I say. “I didn’t even know he was dead. Has his body been found, then?”

The cop says nothing, which means again, no.

Bad cop steps in then, a large burly-looking man, and leans over me. “We know you did it. Just tell us the truth, and we can make a deal to get you less time. Tell us where his body is.”

“I did not do anything,” I tell him. “I’m not saying anything else until my lawyer gets here. Because I don’t like these accusations that you are making.”

They aren’t going to find the body.

I do my own cleanups, and I’m thorough as fuck.

Good cop takes over, because of course they don’t want me calling a lawyer. Especially when my lawyer is Jaxon fucking Bentley, one of the best criminal defense lawyers in our county.

“I’d like to call my lawyer, please,” I say, staying calm and collected. I’d also like to be with Bella to make sure that she is okay. She must be so worried right now, and asking a lot of questions.

She doesn’t know what happened to Robert.

But she does know what I’m capable of.

Chapter Thirty-Five

Bella

“This is not the welcome home I was expecting,” I cry, wiping my tears away. As soon as River was taken away, I went to get help from the MC. “Did you get in contact with his lawyer?”

Romeo nods. “Yes, he’s on his way to the station now. Don’t stress, they don’t have anything on him. You don’t think Rosalind is the one who did the anonymous call, do you?”

“I wouldn’t put anything past her,” Corey says, arms wrapped around herself in a protective cocoon. “Is this my fault, because I punched her?”

“No, it’s not your fault,” I tell her, frowning. “And it’s all going to be okay.”

I take a deep breath, in and out, to try to calm myself. It better fucking be okay, because right now we’re meant to be celebrating our engagement, not dealing with this.

Julianna gives me a big hug. “I know it’s awful timing, but congratulations. And I did notice your big-ass ring. It pretty much takes up half your hand.”

I laugh through my tears. “Thank you. I was so excited to come home and tell you all about it, but then this happened. He will be okay, right? What if they lock him up?”

I honestly don’t know what I’d do. I’d be devastated. I’m not cut out to be a prison wife.

“It will be okay, I promise. Let’s not stress until we’ve spoken to his lawyer, okay? And you can still tell me all about the proposal; it will distract you,” Julianna says, leading me to the living room and sitting down on the couch with me. Corey joins us, and I tell them about the proposal, the rose petals and all the effort he went to.

“That is so sweet,” Julianna says, hand on her heart.

“Who knew he had it in him,” Corey says, sounding extremely impressed. “Well done to him. I can’t wait to congratulate him when this whole murder fiasco is done with.”

She says it lightly, but I’m not sure if it’s because she knows he didn’t do it, or she’s just playing it off so she doesn’t have to deal with the reality of it herself. Maybe she’s the optimistic sort.

Updating them does distract me, but it just makes me miss him and worry even more.

Dammit.

Julianna gives me baby Julian to try to cheer me up. “Here, hold him.”
