Rafael suddenly twisted around, shoving me behind him. “What happened?”

I peered over his shoulder and found that the man who’d been standing there, firing at us, was gone. He’d disappeared.

The house was too quiet. “Quick! We’ve gotta check the others.”

Rafael ran for the door and headed down the hall. The first room we got to was Rose and Nate’s.

They were standing next to the bed, holding each other. Rose was crying and my heart soared with relief. I put my hand on Rafael’s shoulder, “I’m going to go check on everyone else.”

I bolted down to the other bedrooms but instead found the others had all wandered out, looking confused.

“What happened?” Angelique asked, her lip dripping with blood.

Chrissy’s face was bruised, as though she’d been slapped around, but we were all alive. And so were our men.

I glanced around, “Um... I think they’re gone.”

“But how?” Gabriel asked, running his thumb over Angelique’s lip.

“I don’t know,” I said, but we should probably go check that they’re all gone.

“I need to get my kids,” Angelique said, turning and running off down a hallway.

“Let’s all meet in the kitchen,” I said, “And we need to find Bill and the others. We might need to call some ambulances.”

The thought made me frown.

“Okay,” Chrissy said, clinging to Roman. “Let’s go see who else survived.”

I headed back to find my man, feeling like I was in a daze. Was I dreaming or were we sharing some sort of mutual delusion?

“I told the others we’d meet in the kitchen,” I told Rafe and we all wandered down the stairs, silent and awestruck.

The damage to the house was still evident. There was crushed glass in the carpet, broken furniture and even a few weapons lying on the stairs.

I glanced around the group as we assembled. All the men had grabbed jeans and shirts, so when the children came running into the kitchen in a cloud of noise and hugs, at least we were respectable.

Sirens sounded and I glanced towards the flashing blue and red lights coming in through the front windows.

Angelique sighed. “I better go deal with them.”

“What are you going to say?” I asked.

She shrugged. “The truth, I guess.”

“We need to find Bill and his men.” Roman said and grabbed his brothers to walk out the back door.

“I’ll help with the kids.” I told Angelique and went over to pick up one of the twins. “I think we all deserve ice cream sundaes.”

Rose, Chrissy and I began pulling out bowls and opening the freezers, anything to distract ourselves from the fact that we’d just escaped death. How, we weren’t even sure. I didn’t know if I should be grateful or worry about what they, whoever had saved us, would demand in exchange.
