She released her grip, and we walked toward my truck, but my lips still tingled. Her act of kissing me might’ve been innocent, but it was huge that she took that first step. I felt like I could walk on water.

Earning affection was Audrey was becoming an addiction, and I’d spend the rest of the night earning it. Because any doubts I had earlier disappeared. I wanted this woman and would prove to her we could work.

The embarrassment lingered, even if Theo had said all the right things to appease me. Sniffles kept returning if I let myself think about the fact Quentin, some girl, and my mom had made plans to have dinner and never once thought to tell me or ask me. She asked for money yesterday. Was the money I worked my butt off for used for dinner with Quentin and some girl? Hell, if my mom said she wanted to take us out to dinner as a family, I would’ve gladly paid for it.

I would’ve loved that. I missed our family dinners so much. We used to have them every Sunday before our dad got sick, and we hadn’t had one since he died.

The absolute betrayal felt like a knife to the stomach. I did so much for both of them all the time. Bills, using my own money, my time getting Quentin to places so my mom could rest… all of it for what? My family to forget me? To use me like a bank?

I rested my head against the window just as Theo opened his door holding to-go boxes. This man…he was too good to be true, and I knew it. This wouldn’t last, but to have his attention and care on me was unlike anything I had ever experienced. The dinner smelled amazing, and I didn’t have to pretend to smile. “Thank you for doing this. Seriously.”

“Of course.” He set the boxes down by my feet and started the truck. “You’ll be proud to know that I did not, in fact, punch your brother or say anything to your mom. I walked by then, ignored Quentin’s jab, and walked straight to you.”

“Quentin’s jab?”

“Auds, do not ask me to talk about your brother.” He pulled onto the main street and shot me a look. “So, where do you want to go?”

“Is it bad I just want to go to my dorm?”

“Not at all. To your dorm, it is.”

It wasn’t a far drive, and Theo spoke about nonsense but was still entertaining. He moved the conversation away from heavy things like my family or hockey or his mom, so the drive felt like two minutes before we were walking toward my dorm with carryout boxes.

“Have you ever had a date like this before? Dressed like a model but about to eat on a ten-dollar carpet from Walmart?”

“I can’t say I have, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t awesome.” He held the door for me as I opened the main doors and led us to my room. I got my key and let us in, suddenly aware how small my dorm was.

Last time he was here, he saw me in my bra.

Last time I was near a bed, he watched me experience my first orgasm.

My skin prickled with heat and excitement as Theo took off his jacket, undid the top button of his shirt, and rolled up his sleeves. The movement was hot. Distracting. My thighs rubbed together, and my lips parted as his thick forearm muscles bulged with every movement. Everything about Theo was so sexy to me, which was dangerous.

Nothing in my life lasted, so I knew this wouldn’t, but that harsh reality didn’t prevent me from enjoying him, from dreaming about another life with him.

“You okay?” he asked, his brows furrowed.

“Oh. Yeah. You’re just… hot.”

He grinned wide. “Oh. I mistook your face for worry, but you were checking me out?”

I nodded, and he swiped his tongue over the side of his mouth. His gaze moved from face to my collarbone, over my chest and down to the slit of my leg. “You’re fucking stunning. Doesn’t matter if we’re in a dorm, outside, or in a fancy restaurant, you look perfect.”

My breathing grew heavier as I fought a blush. The same overwhelming and distracting heat rattled through my core. It was almost uncomfortable how hot and tight my body was, desperate for a release now that it knew the feeling. I swallowed and stared at Theo’s chest, the small portion that was exposed.

“You hungry? Want to eat?” Theo asked, his voice huskier than normal.

“I’m not hungry for our food.” I didn’t mean to say that. It was so forward of me, and I wasn’t forward. I had no experience to practice. But I wasn’t lying. The thought of eating food was the furthest from my mind. I wanted to ease this heat, to forget about the restaurant, and enjoy the limited time I had with Theo. Because it was temporary. I was fully, totally aware of that.

“Do you mean dessert? Cause, Auds, the way you’re looking at me right now… I want to be a gentleman with you.” He moved the boxes of food to my desk and faced me, his hands in his pockets and one leg crossed over the other.

This man was dangerously attractive.

“I want to feel you.” My voice came out just above a whisper.
