She followed my instructions as if they were an order.

Another French fry moved to her mouth. She was happy to return to what she knew she liked. I liked that. I liked her eating.

“I got a selection of things because I wasn’t sure what you liked.”

“Did we never go out to dinner?”

“No. My schedule was tight back then. Work was intense. I didn’t often see you until late at night.”

“For sex?” Her head dipped, her thoughts getting heavy again.

“Sometimes, things were sexual. Not always,” I admitted. “Sometimes, I just wanted to see you.”

She searched for the meaning behind another bear, one who lingered behind more petals of a rose, keeping a secret from the world. If that rose weren’t there, Cat would see that little bear had his hand on his crotch, and his need to come was the reason for the look of stress on his face.

“It’s funny how your eyes went there.”

“Why is that funny?”

“He’s a sex addict.”

She silenced, wondering if that was another issue of mine, and I neglected to mention that it was because I didn’t want any internal tensing to aggravate the stitches inside her.

“Who is Olivier?” She changed the subject.

“He’s my brother. Kind of. Not biologically. But he’s still my brother.”

“Did I have siblings?”

There was no way to answer without igniting pain, but I still trod carefully.

“You had a sister.”

“I did? What was she like? Where is she now?”

What the fuck could I say here?

“Is she with my parents?” she mumbled, and her head dipped too low for me to see how her lips moved.

“I can’t hear you.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.” She lifted her head. “I was just wondering if she was gone, too. You know, like my parents.”

“No. Your parents died in an explosion. Your sister and you weren’t home.”

“Did she get taken?”

An opportunity to dance around the truth came up, and I took it.

“She met a guy when she was a teenager, and he took her away.”

“And no one has heard from them since?” Sadness invaded her words, making me appreciate all the more I’d held back. “What was her name?”

“Rhylie,” I continued waltzing. “I used to see Daniel from time to time. My work took me across the country. His did the same. But I’m in a different job now.”

She nodded, accepting that I couldn’t take her to see them.

“And I’m Cat? Is that short for something?”
