And he laughed in my face, his dirty breath and mustache both invading my senses.

I forced my head away again and inhaled, relishing all the strange feelings I felt when Remi’s scent first wrapped around me. The nutty scent teased me with memories that were buried inside. The sweetness lingering below made me feel like it was woven through to the very core of whatever we were.

It brought me comfort now, even as it was overpowered by something else, dirty and metallic, filling my nostrils.

I hadn’t even heard the bang.

Blood splattered my face, as did pieces of brain that were too close to my mouth.

“Bullseye,” I heard from somewhere within the darkness.

I shook my head before realizing I could pull my hands from Joseph’s loosened grip.

I wiped the blood and pieces of the shattered skull from my face and tried to move.

Joseph’s heavy frame blanketed mine, crushing my body and bones and amplifying the pain in the organs beneath.

Footsteps approached, and I smelled that smell again—nuts and sweetness and safety.

“Remi,” I whispered, my voice trapped under the weight of the scumbag still inside me. Another tear fell.

“You’re late.” My eyes found him. “But thank you for showing up.”

Dirty sneakers stepped around me with a hobble, and his energy had clearly disappeared to wherever mine had, yet he was still on his feet.

He wrapped his arms around Joseph’s throat and yanked his heavier body from mine.

Pain assaulted my crotch as I shifted into a sitting position. My chest wasn’t ready for the energy it would take to stand, but my intimate parts were desperate for a reprieve.

Joseph lay on his back. One eye was missing, one glassy eye staring at the moonlight as it peeped through the tiny gaps in the trees. His boxers were lingering near his ankles, inside his ugly mustard-colored chinos. His cock wasn’t soft yet and stood proudly coated in my blood.

There was a smile on Remi’s face, but it wasn’t one of happiness. The guy looked completely unhinged, and if he were anyone else, terror would be surfing along the waves of my emotions right now. But it wasn’t. Because something felt familiar, and a little voice inside me—instinct or a lying part of my brain—told me he’d never hurt me.

And whatever it was, I believed it.

“I wish I had just one more bullet.” Remi brought the gun he carried down. The force was mighty, and the barrel stabbed through the skin of Joseph’s cock. His blood mixed with mine, and I turned away, hating the sight.

I hummed over the noise of Remi trying to decapitate the bulbous head of Joseph’s penis, and he stopped dead when he was about to hit him for the second time, the gun inches from the bleeding dick when he tossed it to the side.

He was at my side in seconds, bent between the legs I had to keep open due to the tears and aches. “I thought you couldn’t remember anything?”

Two fingers led me back to him. His touch, save for the jagged edges of his peeled skin that left a trail of blood on my cheek, was so much gentler on my face. Goosebumps spread down my arms, having never remembered being touched so tenderly.

My fingers shook, hovering above his, unsure if I should touch him. His eyes followed, and it almost felt like he wanted me to but wouldn’t ask.

“I don’t.” I shrugged, my fingers finally flattening to his. “I don’t remember anything but this melody, not even the words.”

The song was wordless to me but stuck in my head and repeated whenever I needed to find comfort in something. Like now, moments before, it faded out under Remi’s touch.

“Was it our song?”

“It’s your song.”

I wasn’t sure what he meant by it being my song, but a new smile crawled to his lips, looking far more genuine.

“You dropped this.”

He pulled my panda from his jeans pocket, its squashed face puffing out instantly.
