Bandages covered my chest as I tried to get a look at my scar.

“Where did the heart come from?” Changing my mind about the question, I added, “Don’t tell me. I’ll feel guilty for having it.”

Remi and Novaletti looked guilty, too—their eyes on each other across the bed.

“What if it changes things about me?”

“It won’t.” Remi brushed my skin. “You’ll still be you, but you’ve had a very special gift from a very special person.”

I nodded, hoping that was true.

“Have you been with me the whole time?” Sleep hazed my voice.

“For days now.”

“That explains why you don’t smell as nice as usual.”

“Yeah, I’ll let you have that one. I don’t smell all that great.”

His face lifted into a smile, and I closed my eyes, letting it be the last thing I saw.

“You tired?”

“Yeah. I had a major surgery,” I kept it light as I explained what he already knew.

“Well, that’s not something I’ll forget anytime soon.”

“Me, either.”

I wouldn’t forget anything ever again.

Chapter 74

Catharina

Remi smiled, sadness lingering behind it.

“I’m mad at you.”

I had been for the last four days but managed to hide it. It was easy to forget he’d been a complete asshole by lying to me for weeks, after I told him about my post-surgery dreams and he comforted me through them. It was easy to forget that he was an asshole because he’d already looked for the baby from my dream and had been hurt when he learned what had happened to them. And, it was easy to forget he was an asshole as he hand-fed me while my body still ached each time I so much as lifted my arms. I slowly remembered he was an asshole as I lay in this bed with my gaping mouth open every time he stole a bit for himself because it looked appealing on the fork.

“I know.”

“I’m done. You can have the rest.”

“I’m done, too.” He placed the fork on my plate and pushed the table away.

“Convenient.”

“Couples share.”

“Couples don’t lie to each other.”

He froze. “Maybe not in Disney movies, but this is the real world, Princess.”

“You lied more than most.”

“I told you, I didn’t lie. I just didn’t tell you everything.”
