“You want me to share a bed with your wife?” He glanced over his shoulder at me.

“You’re not Dec. You’re trustworthy.”

Ollie laughed. “So is he.”

“Yeah, I know. Tell him to come by the venue later. I need a ride home. I’m not getting in one of Pencil Dick’s cars.”

“Will do.” Ollie yawned. “What time is the network picking you up? Was it six? So much has gone on that I don’t even remember.”

“Yeah, six. Sleep for another hour. It’s still early.”

“I know.” He glanced at his phone, not realizing quite how early. “Still no word from Pencil Dick.”

“I love that you’ve adopted that nickname.” I sat at the edge of the bed, placing my hand on Cat. I just needed to touch her. Always fucking touch her. “Did you speak with him last night?”

“I texted him. I don’t know if he’s gunning for you alone or if his trust is gone in all of us. He hasn’t responded yet.”

He left his bed, turning on his laptop. “I’ll stay up. I’m almost sure we have decorators at Beyond Heaven today—no doubt a dozen emails regarding paint samples for the new wing. I’ll go through them while she sleeps so they’ll have everything before arriving. Save delays.”

“Thank you. For watching her.” I said, looking over him in his checkered pajama bottoms and no matching top. “I appreciate it. And I’d appreciate those muscles covered up, too.”

His laugh told me he knew I was joking.

I kissed Cat on the forehead, brushing her hair from her pretty face. “I love you. Sweet dreams only, my girl,” I whispered, then placed another kiss on her head.

Ollie watched, seeing me through different eyes, seeing me as different, and I felt it.

I felt everything...because of her.

Chapter 40

Catharina

“Reading porn again, Jolie?” A voice came into the room from the kitchen, where Ollie had appeared, pulling a water from the refrigerator.

I’d left him in his room when I woke up, full of confusion about what I was doing there. He filled me in, and that was when I heard Jolie in the hallway, selecting another book, and I decided to spend my morning with her. And then my afternoon.

“Want one?”

We both politely declined his offer.

It was odd to see Ollie dressed the way he was—in casual clothing. The zip-up jacket and jeans made him look more human than the suits he lived in.

He took a sip.

Woodrow appeared behind him, his worry evident in his voice as he talked on the phone.

“Well, he couldn’t have just got out. Someone must have left the kennel open!” He paused, listening to the voice on the other end. “Yeah. I’ll be right there. I’ll bring Dec. We’ll find him.” He hung up the call.

“Don’t panic.”

“Klaus got loose. He’s out in the woods somewhere.”

“I have to go into Beyond Heaven. Painters want clarification on something that can’t be discussed over the phone for some reason. I’ll give you a ride. Get Dec.”

Woodrow did exactly that, scurrying off down the hallway in search of his brother.

“Can you both put on some shoes and be ready to go in five minutes?” Ollie didn’t wait for our answer, his eyes leaving us as we struggled up from the chair where Jolie had been telling me details of today’s read—a much lighter story.
