“You want to live in the moment more, don’t you?”

“Yes, but—”

“And you want to go sky diving, don’t you?”

“Yes, but—”

“Then we’re going. End of discussion.” TJ swivels and waltzes toward the door. He holds it open with his foot and curls his index finger at me. “Let’s go, baby doll.”

My heart races and my palms are slick with sweat as I ball them at my sides. “TJ, this is insane.”

“The fact that I paid for you, or the fact that we’re about to jump out of a perfectly good airplane?”

“Both.”

“Consider the money a bonus.”

“For what? I’ve only been working a few weeks.”

He sighs and rubs the stubble on his jawline. “Can we argue about this in my truck? I don’t want to miss our jump time.”

My hands tremble. “I’m not ready for this yet. I needed to work up to this. It’s scary, not to mention how expensive it is. I just wrote that list in my notebook on a whim. I didn’t actually mean to complete it right now. It’s more of a bucket list. Something I do over a span of time, you know? And—hey!”

TJ hoists me over his shoulder and strides out into the parking lot. “We’ll never make it if you keep naming all the reasons you shouldn’t. Don’t get your panties in a bunch.”

“My panties are not bunched! Put me down,” I shout, flailing to get out of his grip.

TJ swings open his passenger door and I bounce onto the seat when he flings me inside. I smooth my hair down, chest heaving. “This is kidnapping, you know.”

He laughs as he shuts the door and jogs around to the driver’s side. His amusement only infuriates me further.

When he pulls out of the parking lot, my heart sinks into my stomach. I’m really going sky diving.

Twenty minutes into the trip, TJ glances at me. “Are you going to give me the silent treatment the entire ride?”

My arms are crossed and I’m facing away from him.

“Carla, it’s just money.”

I say nothing.

“The real reason you’re mad is because you’re not in control. If you want to change, you need to push yourself to do things outside your comfort zone.”

My eyes remain fixed on the trees as we whiz by, their leaves such warm, vibrant colors. Fall in Florida never looked like this.

“Wanna fuck?”

My head swivels Exorcist-style. “Excuse me?”

TJ’s grinning. “Knew that’d get you to say something.”

I roll my eyes.

“Tell me why you’re mad.”

“I’m not mad,” I say with a sigh. “I’m more embarrassed than anything. I feel like your charity case. Poor Carla. She’s so rigid and needs to lighten up. I have to teach her how to have fun.”

The truck jerks to the right and comes to an abrupt stop in the gravel on the side of the highway. TJ shifts in his seat and pins me with intensity. “You are not a charity case. I’m not doing this because I feel bad for you, nor am I doing this because I feel like I have to. I don’t need to teach you how to be fun. You were fun the night we met and had incredible sex, and you were fun when all we did was shop for office supplies.
