He rolled off her, and they snuggled under a blanket. She rested her head on his chest.

“I can do that.” He played with a lock of her hair.

“You don’t think I’m a bad person, do you?”

He lifted her chin, so she looked at him. “You are not a bad person. There is nothing wrong with what just happened.”

Tears formed in Angela’s eyes.

“Hey, why are you crying?” He moved to get off the bed.

“Where are you going?”

“I should get you some water.”

“Please don’t go. Just hold me.”

Blake pulled her closer and tucked the blankets around her.

Angela shook her head and buried her face against his chest. She didn’t respond.

Blake ran his hand down her back. “When you’re ready, I want you to talk to me.”

She nodded. His words made her cry even harder. He held her tighter and waited until she was finished.

After a few minutes, she said, “I’ve never wanted anyone to see me as a bad person.”

“Angela, you are not a bad person. Do you think that is how I see you?”

She lifted her body and moved to sit next to him. “That’s just it. I know you don’t. I have always worried about what people thought of me.” She laughed a little. “That might seem hard to believe, considering what I do for a living, but that’s different. When I’m doing presidential stuff, it’s like I’m acting. In the other areas of my life, I have always worried that if people saw the real me, they wouldn’t like what they see.”

Blake put an arm over her shoulder and held her close. “I saw the real you the moment I met you. The real you is amazing.” He looked down at her and wiped away a single falling tear. “You have to be so many things for so many people. When you’re with me, let me see the real you. Let me take care of the real you. Let me love the real you.”

And that’s exactly what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

Chapter Nineteen

Angela

Two weeks later

“You’re looking very presidential this morning, Madam President,” Doyle said.

Blake rolled his eyes. “Why are you even still here?”

Doyle winked. “I have nothing else to do right now.”

Angela had an hour before the press conference that would change the world. She knew this would be one of those pivotal historical moments that changed everything.

Blake, Doyle, Tristan, and Angela sat in the Oval Office, brainstorming any last-minute details they hadn’t thought of yet. Victoria, who started the week before, sat at a side table.

Since returning from Arkansas, Angela spent every waking moment strategizing how to approach her legislation and exposing supernaturals to the world. She also spent time getting her re-election campaign started.

Mariah and Robert walked into the office. Robert stayed by the door, and Mariah sat beside Angela on the couch. She took Angela’s hand and squeezed. “Are you sure about this? We can just announce your intent to run again.”

“I am sure about this. It’s the right thing to do. Senator Chadwick is already leaps and bounds ahead of us.”

“Are you concerned supernaturals will see what you’re doing as only a plot to gain votes?” Mariah said.
