Page 42 of Beast: Part One

I’m a little caught off guard about his admission of loving me. Nic was fun, but even sober I knew I was too broken to love. I think in his mind he thought he loved me, but he didn’t. He didn’t even know me.

“I tried. It just got hard,” I admit.

He shakes his head. “Naw. You didn’t love me enough to stay clean. Hell, you don’t love yourself enough to stay clean.”

He’s not wrong.

The door opens, and Rico walks in holding a large bag of pills. My mouth waters at the sight.

“Is this enough?” Rico asks tossing the bag to Nic. He catches it with one hand.

“Yeah, this is good.” Nic turns to me with a sneer. “This is what you like, ain’t it?”

My heart starts to race, and I don’t take my eyes off the bag in his hands. I don’t have to answer because he knows what I like.

Loud gunshots come from downstairs. Nic and Rico pause and turn toward the door. Since we got here the noise has been on a level close to torture. Between the rap music, the Call of Duty game, and the shouting, my ears have been ringing.

“What the fuck are they doing down there,” Nic asks.

“On that damn game. That shit sounds loud as hell.”

Both men turn back to me. Nic comes over and squats in front of me, he grabs my jaw and squeezes hard. I whimper.

“Since you want to be a druggie so damn bad, you’re going to take this entire bag of pills.”

My eyes widen. There has to be fifty or more hydrocodone pills in that bag. I’ll be dead within twenty minutes if I take that many.

“Rico, open this shit up. I’m going to hold her mouth open.”

I immediately start to fight. Rico walks over to take the bag. Suddenly, the door bursts open. Standing in the doorway with blood splatter on his chest and his hair hanging down curtaining his face, is Gabriel.

“What the fuck,” Nic shouts turning to face Gabriel.

Rico goes for his gun, but he’s too slow. Gabriel fires one shot shooting Rico directly in the eye.

He walks further into the room. Nic pulls me up off the floor and places me in front of him. The next thing I know, there is a gun pressed to the side of my head.

“Take another step you big muthafucker, and I’ll blow this bitch’s head off.”

Gabriel stops walking forward. He’s about five steps away from Nic and I. His gaze is solely on Nic.

“Toss your gun to the left,” Nic tells Gabriel.

For a second, Gabe doesn’t respond. He tilts his head and stares at Nic. I try to plead with my eyes for him not to get rid of his gun. It’s his only chance of getting out of here alive. I don’t know how he got past all the guys downstairs, but if he loses that gun Nic will shoot him.

Gabe’s eyes cut to me. I subtly shake my head at him. I’m dying tonight regardless. This isn’t an act of selflessness. I’m not saving him over myself. I’m being realistic. Either way, I’m dying tonight, no need for him to die too.

Nic presses the gun even further into the side of my head. I wince when he hits a tender spot.

“Do it,” Nic shouts.

Gabriel easily tosses the gun away from him. It hits the wall with a thud. I shut my eyes. The only hope he has now is prayer.

Nic starts to laugh. “Damn, dude. You know, I feel sorry for you. You’re just another victim of Summer Jones. What did she do to you? Is it the pussy?” Nic asks.

Gabriel doesn’t respond.

“That shit does have a tight grip, I won’t lie. Probably some of the best I’ve had. Especially when she does that shy act like she doesn’t know what the fuck she’s doing.”
