He runs a finger across my nose where my freckles are the most abundant.

“I’m at peace. And to me that is more valuable than happiness. Happiness comes and goes, but finding peace is something that stays with you.”

I feel like the story of the Grinch where his heart suddenly grows three sizes larger. I lean up on my knees and place a kiss on his lips. He wraps his arms around my waist bringing me in closer. He opens his mouth deepening the kiss.

Suddenly bubbles start floating around our head. We pull apart laughing as Gabe stands over us blowing his bubbles.

I grab for him and he starts to laugh as he plops down on my lap.

“Mama, you kissed Hulk,” he chuckles.

I look at Gabriel who has his eyes glued to me.

“Yeah, I kissed Hulk,” I say, before looking down at my son. “But do you want to know a secret?”

Gabe nods his head.

“Well, Hulk is your father.”

This time when I look at Gabriel there is an intensity to his gaze that I can’t read.

But I wanted to let him know that we accepted him. Yes, I know he’s got issues, and I don’t believe that those issues will ever go away. I heard him that day in my backyard when I found that body.

Gabriel is a killer. It’s why I didn’t question him when Andrew went missing. I knew Andrew wouldn’t live to see another day. It’s why I initially hesitated to tell Gabriel what happened. I knew what the outcome would be.

However, if I claim to love Gabriel, then I have to love all of him. And I do.

“I already know that secret,” Gabe says with a laugh.

Now I’m confused because I never told him. Even Gabriel looks baffled.

“How did you know,” Gabriel asks.

“Well, your name is Gabriel, and my name is Gabriel. And you look like me.”

Now I know my son is pretty smart for his age, but I had no idea he was doing deductive reasoning like that.

“Plus,” he goes on to say. “Aunt Trina told me.” He gives a big goofy grin.

Gabriel laughs that low throaty sound that makes my panties wet. I can’t help but join him. We spent the rest of our day hanging out at the park and then after we put Gabe to sleep, I rode Gabriel’s dick on the couch until he nor I could move.

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Birthday Party

Summer

The birthday party is everything I thought it would be. The moment I walked into my mother’s house, Raina and all her friends turned up their noses at me. I wasn’t surprised nor hurt by their actions.

My mother has been very cheery and accommodating. She even complimented me on my outfit. The most interesting reaction was when I introduced Gabriel to everyone. It seemed to take a lot of people by surprise. I even heard one of my sister’s friends say she thought I didn’t know who my child’s father was.

We’ve spent most of the party in the small backyard. MJ and his friends were running around and screaming. Gabe was playing by himself at the kinetic sand table I bought him and my nephew to share at my mother’s when she used to babysit him.

“He’s alright,” I say to Gabriel. “He prefers to be by himself.”

He hasn’t taken his eyes off our son this entire time. There are only a handful of men here. Yet, I can’t see Gabriel talking to any of them. They are mostly friends of Mitch.

“I know,” he says glancing at me. “I was the same way.”
