Even if his eyes are completely gorgeous and his little wispy curls make me want to run my fingers through their auburn lengths.

Finn steps into my space so quickly my first instinct is to scramble over the back of the chair. Before I can move, he grabs my hand and falls to one knee in front of my seat, trapping me in place. “I won’t let Sebastian harm ye, lass. Nor Rune. No vampire here will lay a hand on ye. I swear it.”

The sincerity in his emerald gaze almost convinces me.

Almost.

It’s not real, I remind myself. All of his civility is nothing more than an illusion.

I pull my hand away and stare at the carved wooden arm of the chair instead. It doesn’t matter how sincere he seems, I can’t trust anything that comes out of a vampire’s mouth.

Their inherent otherworldly beauty makes it difficult to keep my head on straight and remember the basics of what to do when coming face-to-face with a vamp.

Genuine or not, it’s too late for promises like that.

“Is it true?” I ask. “What you said out there? We’re unity partners?”

The thought makes me woozy.

This is exactly what my grandmother warned me of—why she moved us to another continent. Fighting against the unity bonds led to my parents’ deaths. If what this vampire said is true, it will no doubt lead to mine as well.

“I’m not sure,” he admits, suddenly standing a few feet from me again and looking dejected.

I know vampires move unnaturally fast, of course, but to witness it in person is jarring each time.

Then, an idea hits me.

“If you really want me to believe we’re on the same side, there is one thing you could do to prove it.”

He raises a brow at me, head tilting slightly. The movement sends a strand of copper hair into his face, so I have to look away before I give in to the urge to touch. “Why do I have a feeling this is some sort of trickery?”

I shrug. “It could be, but we need to start somewhere, right?”

A hint of a smile tugs at his mouth. “Ah, using my own words against me. Fine. Tell me.”

“My grandmother left something to me. Let me go back to my family’s home and get it.”

If I could get my hands on my family grimoire, it would give me a leg up over the vampires. Or at least put us on an equal playing field.

“No,” he says, not even pausing to consider it.

“You just finished telling me I’m not a prisoner. Yet you won’t let me leave?”

“What if the wolves are hanging around waiting for ye to make a reappearance?”

“Believe it or not, I can take care of myself,” I say, though admittedly, I hadn’t thought of that.

“Sure, because traipsing through the city on yer own worked out so well for ye last time. Even with yer magic, yer no match for even a single werewolf.”

“Now that’s just insulting.”

I could hold my own against one werewolf. Hell, I took down a vamp and a wolf at the same time. I didn’t mean to, but hey, potato-tomato, he doesn’t know that.

“Why do you care what happens to me?”

“Yer mine and I take great care of what is mine.”

“Then come with me to my family’s home.”
