I’m shocked because he sounds genuinely apologetic.

“What the werewolves did to ye is unacceptable. That they came into our territory to take ye is even worse. Egan broke the two most integral rules of our truce—the only thing holding together the fragile peace we’ve found.”

I didn’t know things were still so bad here.

“The wolves aren’t the only ones responsible for my suffering,” I point out.

Fintan’s brow creases. “No harm has befallen ye from the moment ye came into our care. I made sure of it.”

Is he serious right now?

Okay, maybe these three vampires haven’t hit me or stuck their fangs in me yet, but I’m positive that won’t last long. Physically, I’m fine. Mentally, I’m a bloody wreck.

After all of this… I’ll need a whole slew of therapists to Humpty Dumpty my scrambled brain back together again. And Fintan’s mind games aren’t helping.

It’s easier to read the other two.

Rune wears his emotions on his sleeve. For a member of the undead, he sure is lively. Sebastian seems to only be capable of anger and hatred and general douchebaggery.

Fintan is… something else entirely. One minute he’s all buddy-buddy, the next he’s a typical malicious vampire, laying his claim on me like I’m his possession.

He’s all over the damn place.

Honestly, the same could be said about me.

“You might take a different tactic than Egan, but you’re no different than the wolves,” I say, my mood swinging wildly again.

“We needed to take precaution until we could confirm that ye could cooperate with us.”

“In that case, you might as well take me back to your dungeon, because I still have no intention of helping vampires. Or just give me back to your leader and let him throw me into oncoming traffic.”

My knees are still shaking from the entire ordeal. I’ve run out of adrenaline and I’m about to crash hard. I sink into one of the velvet armchairs in the sitting area before my body gives out on me.

“He was bluffing, ye know,” Finn says, observing me. “Sebastian wouldn’t have dropped ye.”

“No, I don’t know. And you don’t know that, either.”

“Ye don’t know Sebastian like I do.”

“Did you miss the part where he dangled me three hundred feet above the city streets? Because it’s the only thing I see each time I close my eyes.” My voice rises, shrill and panicky, and I force myself to pause and calm down, balling my hands into fists in my lap. “You didn’t see the malice in Sebastian’s gaze.”

“That hatred is the reason he wouldn’t have done it.”

I blink at him. “I must have a wicked concussion because you’re not making any sense.”

Concern flashes over the Celt’s face, and he takes a step forward before stopping himself and going back to his original position.

“Are ye hurting?” he asks from his place in the middle of the room. “I told Rune there could be repercussions from using his thrall so carelessly.”

Jeez, this vampire really is all over the place.

I scoff. “Do you need me in pristine condition before you start the torturing?”

“I won’t hurt ye.”

Or so he keeps insisting.

“Right… just threaten to.” I look away, reminding myself not to get caught up in the ethereal beauty of this supernatural creature and risk getting sucked into his thrall.
