“She will,” Sebastian says. “One way or another.”

Even without looking directly at him, I feel his intense gaze fixed on me. And then he’s gone. He moves so quickly it’s like he blinks in and out of existence, too fast for me to track until suddenly he’s standing directly in front of me, his hands gripping the bars between us.

I recoil, stumbling back until I knock my skull against the brick of the back wall.

“Bastian,” the red-haired one chastises, but it’s not enough to control his king.

Sebastian dips his chin and flashes me a taunting grin. “Your intel is wrong, little girl. Pawns are exactly what the Tremé witches made yourselves twenty-five years ago…”

He continues, but my focus is locked on his hands as they grasp the bars of my prison.

My growing frustration fuels my magic and I send a jolt of electricity through the metal. The sizzle of skin and flickering of the light marks the exact point of contact.

Sebastian curses, hissing as he pulls his hands away. His fingertips are charred, and even though the flesh mends itself before my eyes, I take pleasure in the slight pain I’ve caused him. It’s only a drop in the bucket compared to the agony he’s caused me, but I’ll take the win.

“You witch,” he spits the words like an insult.

“Exactly.” I flip him the double bird to really drive the sentiment home.

Rune laughs, a hearty, full-bodied chuckle that shakes his shoulders. “I like her. She’s fiery.”

I’m tempted to show him exactly how fiery, but consider that I need to keep as much of my energy as possible to make my escape from here.

Rune joins Sebastian at the bars of my cell, careful not to come in contact with them as he gets a closer look at me. “You think we should keep her around for a while?”

“Absolutely not.” The answer comes without hesitation.

“Aw, c’mon, boss. Gimme a month and I’ll have her tamed.”

I don’t want to know what he’s planning, but the way he looks me over gives me a good idea.

Sebastian frowns. “While I would love to witness that, I have my own plans for Miss Dumont.”

This is a literal nightmare come to life.

“Sebastian,” Fintan says as he pulls the leader away from the bars of my cage. “I need a word… in private.”

With a glance over his shoulder at me, Sebastian breaks out of Fintan’s hold and storms off, followed closely by his hunky brute enforcers.

When a door in the distance clangs shut, I slump against the cool stone wall. How am I getting out of this one? Sebastian seems intent on doling out whatever retribution he feels he’s due. That doesn’t bode well for me.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

FINN

Well, that went about as horrible as I expected. It doesn’t help that my brothers are only making the situation worse—especially Sebastian. He needs to get his anger under control or there’s no way Josephine will help us.

Why would she?

To her, we are the monsters who killed her parents. We are the scary creatures that go bump in the night.

Her fear and disdain are so strong I can sense them even with twelve stories between us. It claws at my gut, and it’s more than being an empath.

I don’t want her to fear me. I want to win her over. What if it’s already too late? What if her idea of me is already cemented because of what I am?

Kidnapping her and locking her in a cell isn’t helping.

Now that she’s here, within my grasp, the pull is growing even stronger. It’s become all but impossible to resist. I never thought I would deal with a stronger lust than blood. Josephine Dumont is ruining every bit of self-control I have.
