“Why did Egan and his wolves take you?” The bulky one—Rune—asks, trying to control the conversation.

I pan my gaze from one vampire to the next and say nothing. I’m not about to help the people who murdered my parents.

“You are just like your mother,” Sebastian hisses.

I meet his glower with an equal level of disdain. “I wouldn’t know. You killed her before I got to know her.”

I was so young that I can’t remember Mom’s laugh, or Dad’s smile. Even my memories of their faces are blurry, filled in by the few family pictures in a photo album back home.

Sebastian laughs and this time I think maybe my magic will explode out of me with the force of the rage that provokes.

“I was whole before your mother came into my life. Since then, I have been trapped in the limbo between life and death.”

The self-pity with this guy is real.

“Wow. Have you tried poetry? I’ve heard it’s cathartic.”

He steps forward and glares. “You have no idea what I have endured. No idea how it feels to hunger and be unable to satiate it no matter how hard you try. It is pure torture to lose a Unity Witch the way I lost Celine.”

Unity Witch? Is he saying that he and Mom were…

Sebastian’s words finally make it past the thick wall of anger muffling my thoughts. Shock takes over my anger… that, and disbelief.

Grand-Mère said nothing about Mom being Sebastian Fontenot’s Unity Witch. She would have told me something as important as that. Right?

“Enough of this distraction,” Sebastian snarls.

I would have said it was him doing the distracting, but I guess that’s just me.

“I will not ask a third time, witch,” he warns. “You’re new to the city, so I’ll give you the rundown of how things work. As King of the French Quarter, the Sun Witches of Tremé fall under my dominion. You fall under my dominion. And you will obey your king.”

Okay, it’s tacky that he refers to himself as a king.

“I owe you no answers, vampire. Your kind and the werewolves are none of my concern. None of what happens in this city is my concern.” My voice trembles slightly, but I refuse to back down to the likes of this arse.

Mom didn’t and neither will I.

“Are ye sure about that, lass?” The voice draws me to Fintan’s gaze for a split moment before I catch myself and stare at his mouth instead. “Ye obviously didn’t know about the unity bond between Sebastian and yer mother. Are ye sure ye know yer history as well as ye think?”

I try to ignore Fintan’s goading, but he can sense my interest. The corner of his lip turns up like he’s pleased with himself. “As I’m sure ye’ve already gathered, the werewolves are a ruthless bunch.”

Yeah, no freaking kidding—but so are the vampires.

Even more so.

“Regardless of what they wanted initially, are ye sure that Egan and his pack are done with ye?”

My silence says it all.

“The wolves don’t take lightly to losing,” Rune adds. “And while they aren’t as good at holding a grudge as vampires, they are a persistent breed. You know what they say about a dog with a bone…”

Fintan nods, graciously accepting the assist. “Help us, and we’ll help ye in return.”

Despite my fear—of both my previous and current captors—a spark of irritation flares within me. I’m not going to be cajoled into compliance. Once I escape from here, neither the werewolves nor the vampires will find me again.

I address the space between the three of them to avoid any direct eye contact and keep my voice as steady as possible. “I know what vampires do to witches in this city. I won’t be toyed with or used as a pawn in your supernatural games.”

The Viking sighs and scrubs a hand through his scruffy beard. “See, I told you. She’s not going to cooperate.”
