Neither does Finn. “We should wait until dusk. Then we can move in the shadows and still be safe.”

“And give the wolves the upper hand? No, we move now and act while their guard is down.”

I stop to face Rune and Finn and meet their gazes. “The Algiers pack hunted on our grounds. They killed our brother, and they broke the pact. Today, we remind the wolves—and anyone else who dares to try—exactly why nobody crosses the King of the French Quarter. Are you with me?”

Rune shrugs. “Bring it. I’m ready for payback. Let’s see how Egan likes it when I sink my fangs into one of his pack.”

The fact that Finn doesn’t jump on board once Rune does is strange. What is going on with him today?

“And you, Fintan?”

He groans, but gives in. “It’ll be on my head if either of ye get yourselves hurt.”

“That’s more like it.” Rune claps Finn on the back. “Now let’s go kick some furry ass!”

And that’s why I love these boys… I can always count on Rune and Finn.

CHAPTER TEN

JOSIE

Danica, the female wolf that seems to hate me solely for existing, marches me through each room of my childhood home, standing guard at the door as she watches me search from top to bottom—first in the dining room, then the kitchen, the living room, and even the hall closet before shoving me up the stairs.

I trip on the bottom step and fall against the wall.

“Are you sure you’re a Dumont? You are more incompetent than a human.”

I don’t react to the jab. I barely even react when Danica hauls me to my feet and gets us moving again.

I’m out of steam. I’m tired physically and mentally, too. The more time I spend exploring the main floor, the more buried memories I unearth. The second story is no different. Even the chipped wainscoting of the master bedroom brings back snippets of moments from another life.

This is where I lived with my parents… with Grand-Mère.

Thinking of her now only makes my heart constrict.

Claudette Dumont was the most skilled, powerful witch I’ve ever seen. She would know what to do in a situation like this. No. She wouldn’t have been caught by the werewolves.

If she was here now, she would ream me out while simultaneously blasting every wolf that stood in our way.

Is she with me now?

Maybe after her spirit appeared at the cemetery, she stuck around. It’s wishful thinking—and selfish.

By now, my grandmother has rejoined Mother Gaia. She’s safely on the other side with Mom and Dad.

If I wasn’t wearing this stupid neck bracer, I could feel the magic of my family within these walls, I’m sure of it. Traces of them scattered here and there.

I just need to slip away from my pushy, overbearing babysitter for a minute or two and find something to pry this collar off. Then it’s a straight trip to the airport to book the next flight out of New Orleans.

I don’t care where it’s headed, as long as it’s far from here.

“Start looking,” Danica orders, crossing her arms and standing guard in the doorway.

I have no idea about the Alpha’s missing amulet. I have even less of a clue about where my mother would have hidden it if she did steal it.

Not that I’d give up the location even if I knew. The moonstone amulet is important to Egan, and my mother thought hiding it from the Algiers Alpha was worth the risk.

The moment the Alpha has it, I will have served my purpose and he’ll kill me.
