Okay, seriously. What is so important about this damn moonstone amulet that Mom went to such lengths to steal and veil it from Egan?

The alpha snarls, the sound muted beneath the wood of the dining table cracking under his grip. “Why do I bother keeping you fed and housed if you can’t do one simple thing for me?”

“I’m sorry, Alpha.” The witch’s voice is small and frightened.

I wish there was something I could do for her, but I’m barely surviving myself as it is.

Egan snaps his fingers and the brute that broke down the door leaves his post and joins us. “Take her back to the car while the rest of us get to work.”

Sarah flinches when Walter’s hand lands on the small of her back, pushing her forward and leading her from the dining room and out of the house.

“Guess that means you’re up, Miss Dumont. And no pressure, but if you fail like Sarah did…” The corner of his mouth tilts up in a smirk that makes my stomach drop. “Well, I have reason to keep my Moon Witch around. Without the amulet, I can’t say the same for you.”

No pressure.

SEBASTIAN

I run into Rune and Fintan on my way through the tunnels to the hotel. “Just who I was looking for.” I turn on my heel and walk in stride with them, going back the way I came, toward Club Sanguine. “Why aren’t the two of you with the excursion party?”

“Excursion party?” Finn asks, leaning around Rune’s bulk to look at me. “It’s still daylight. Is it a suicide pact excursion party?”

“No.”

“Where are we goin’, boss?” Rune asks.

That’s more like it. Rune is up for anything. Sometimes I wish Fintan was the same. Then again, their differences are why both of them make such a good team as my enforcers.

They keep me balanced.

“I’ve called a meeting with the Sun Witches,” I explain as we walk. “They are on their way to the club. The three of us will regroup with Leo, Naomi, and Declan there before heading to the Dumont residence.”

“Again, in the daylight?”

The skepticism in Fintan’s tone irks me. I trust him wholly, but sometimes he forgets his place—a side effect of his sire not being hard enough on him.

Rune is too lenient with his brood. It’s why fledglings like Josh and Vance still don’t know their place within the horde and act like spoiled teenagers rather than functioning members of our family. There is no room in my horde for disrespect or insubordination.

Then again, neither Fintan nor Rune are the leader of the parish, so they don’t need to concern themselves with things like that. That responsibility falls to me alone.

“You’re planning on trying that spell again, aren’t you?” Rune asks.

“What spell?” Finn asks.

Rune’s gaze remains focused on me when he answers, as if he’s analyzing me. “A spell that will shroud us from the sun long enough to make it through the Quarter and into Tremé.”

Fintan’s eyes widen. “Is that even possible?”

“Yes,” I answer, cutting off Rune’s response.

“It’s possible,” Rune continues, “but it’s also dangerous. That spell is unpredictable. The last time we tried it, I almost lost a hand. That shit hurt.”

As I remember it, I told Rune to stay still while the witches struggled to hold the overwhelming amount of magic, but as always, he was too impatient to heed my warning.

“Things will go more smoothly this time around.”

Rune doesn’t look convinced.
