Water splashes out the sides of the hot tub as I spin around to find Sebastian glaring at me from beside the pool.

“Now I’ll never be able to relax.” I sink further into the rolling water, but not even the blessed heat can soothe the tension Sebastian Fontenot causes my muscles.

Rune grins. “Hey, Bas. You here to join our pool party?”

Sebastian ignores the question and remains focused on me. “If you kill the leader of the largest werewolf pack in New Orleans, it will cause an all-out war when his people seek to avenge their Alpha’s death.”

“I’m not suggesting we kill him.”

“Oh?” Sebastian quirks a cocky brow at me. “What do you suggest then, little witch?”

I wish I could punch his stupid face. Just once. A good, clean right hook.

“A do no evil spell. It’s a binding spell that will make it so that whatever harm Egan causes others, he inflicts on himself as well.”

“That sounds like a nifty little spell.”

I’m sure I saw something like it when I was flipping through the Dumont spellbook.

“How do you propose we go about doing that? We can’t exactly set out a steak to lure him out.”

“You don’t think a werewolf is stupid enough to fall for a nice, raw, juicy cut of meat?”

“A werewolf? Yes. Egan? Not a chance. He’s too cautious.”

“Which is why we’ll give him the one thing he wants more than anything else.”

Sebastian cocks a lazy brow. “I don’t know where you’ve been, but we have been sorely lacking in the moonstone amulet department.”

“Not for long. I’ll need my family’s grimoire, a—”

“No,” Sebastian says quickly, cutting me off before I lay out my plan. “Absolutely not.”

“You’re going to have to trust me a bit here, King. Hell, read over my shoulder if you need to.”

He doesn’t budge.

“Okay, maybe you don’t trust me, but what about the unity bonds? Can’t you at least trust that something greater than either of us tied us together for a reason?”

He grunts. “Now I trust your plan even less.”

“Why? I’m trying to help.”

“We don’t need your help.”

“Apparently you do because you’ve got an Algiers pack problem in the Quarter, and it started before I even got here.”

“So, now our problem has become your problem? Am I to believe you’re suddenly on Team Vampire?”

“We’re unity bound.”

“As I was with your mother. That didn’t mean shit.”

I let out a sigh of frustration, barely refraining from ripping my hair out. “You are an impossible prat, Sebastian Fontenot.”

Finn places a reassuring hand on my arm and sends me a wave of soothing energy. For the first time, the use of his power is more than welcome. I let out a long breath and ease myself the rest of the way out of a mental spiral.

“Tell me what you need, and you’ll have it,” he says, promptly shutting Sebastian down when he rejects the idea a second time.
