I closed my eyes tightly for a moment, trying to push the pain out of my mind. When I opened them again, I cut my eyes in all directions trying to find Nolan.

I finally found him standing behind one of the EMT’s and his face was heartbreaking; red, tear-stained, angry, and scared.

“Any idea what happened here?” the male paramedic asked him as they began to climb the stairs with me.

“She was—the chair, it rolled,” he said.

The paramedic eyed him suspiciously as they reached the top ground with me. They hoisted me onto a stretcher and began to walk out of the aquarium with me.

They took me outside, loaded me into the ambulance, and the female came in the back with me.

“Where are you taking her?” Nolan asked.

“Redwood Medical,” she said. “Call her parents and have them meet us there.”

“No!” I managed to yell. I closed my eyes as the pain pulsed through me sharper than before at my sudden outburst.

“Honey, we need consent to treat you,” she said.

“I’m twenty years old. I can consent. Nolan?” I called out weakly.

“I’m here, Janey,” he said leaning into the ambulance.

“Don’t call them. Just be there when I get there, okay?”

“I promise.”

The doors to the ambulance were slammed shut and the sirens started up.

That was the last thing I remembered about my day at the aquarium with Nolan.

Chapter Five

I guess it was about a week and a half later when I was woken by the sound of pacing in my room. My eyes fluttered a little and I heard Liam yelling that I was awake.

I put a hand to my head for a moment before I fully opened my eyes. I saw Stella’s face hovering a few inches from mine. I smiled at her and she fell against me, giving me the biggest hug she could muster.

“I was scared, Starr,” she said tearfully. “You were asleep for a really long time.”

“I’m fine, Rabbit. I guess I was just sleepy,” I replied, rubbing her back reassuringly.

“Jane?”

I looked over at my mother who was sitting next to the bed, nervously wringing her hands. Behind her I saw my father and deduced that it was him who had to be pacing.

“Hi, guys,” I said weakly as Liam climbed onto the bed and hugged me as tightly as Stella did.

Mom, Dad, Rabbit, and Nugget. Where’s Nolan? I wondered, looking around.

“Aaron, why don’t you take the kids down to the cafeteria so I can talk to Jane,” she suggested, glancing up at him.

He grunted and plucked the children off of the bed. Dad hovered over me for a moment with tears in his eyes before he leaned down and kissed my forehead. I smiled at him, and he left the room with Stella and Liam.

“I’m so happy you’re awake, sweetheart,” she said softly.

“Me too. I guess I just needed a good night’s sleep.”

“Jane, you've been asleep for a week,” she replied seriously.
