“I think I missed a pill somehow during the trip to Australia. You know how I am with the time changes.” She wrinkled her nose ruefully. “And I just feel different. But also a lot like the way I felt with Elliott.”

“You know there are perfectly scientific tests that can tell you? You don’t have to ask your cards.”

“Where’s the fun in that?” Her brow quirked indignantly.

God, she was cute. “Fair point. And when have these cards ever let you down? But I don’t see a dilemma. I’m here to help with the kids—” He caught his breath as fresh wonder expanded in his chest. “Plural. Can you imagine?”

“You’re happy?” she asked with a teary smile.

“So happy.”

They couldn’t seem to kiss, they were both grinning so wide.

“But I also know that means we’re going to lose some of these quiet moments, so let’s take advantage of each other while we can,” he managed to say, sliding his hand under her shirt in search of her breast.

“Okay, but upstairs. Granny’s here.” She pointed at the empty chair across the table.

He froze to stare at her, knowing she was full of it. Her mouth was twitching. She had probably staged this entire reading as an elaborate ruse to deliver this news to him in the most playful way possible. To make him believe in cards and ghosts and supernatural forces.

Which he did, because what else was love? Not something that could be measured or tested or proved. It wasn’t even a trick you played on yourself. It was something you experienced and expressed andknew.

“Thank you for the good news, Granny. Make yourself at home.” He rose and helped his snickering wife to her feet, then kept her hand as he led her up the stairs.
