“Nathan, please...”

“Rose, do you have to fight everything I say? It’s a holiday, one-week. Liam and Charlotte will survive without you, Charlotte has family too.” Nathan’s frustration was showing in his voice and I hated fighting with him after we’d had such a great day.

I let out a sigh. I knew he was right, Charlotte and Liam would do just fine without me, and a holiday sounded wonderful. I definitely needed to relax. I felt as though my whole body had been tensed up tight for days.

“Well, where are we going to go?” I asked.

Nathan glanced at me, and I know he could hear the touch of excitement growing in my voice. He smiled. “Where do you want to go?”

“I get to choose?”

Nathan shrugged one big shoulder, amusement clear in his eyes. “Sure, wherever you want.”

I thought for a moment. “What about Hawaii? I’ve always wanted to go there.”

“Good choice. Alright, Hawaii it is. I’ll have Lucy organise it when we get back to the office.”

When Nathan and I returned to his office, Nathan went and spoke to Lucy, while I went back to work on more spreadsheets. I looked up briefly when Nathan came into the office, but I didn’t look up again until six o’clock.

I stood up and stretched, a yawn escaping my mouth. “I’m done with these notes.”

Nathan looked up from the papers he was reading and he glanced down at his watch. He put the papers down on his desk and had his own stretch. “Alright, let’s go home. We still have to pack. Our plane leaves early in the morning.”

Chapter eleven

Nathan drove us straight home from work and we went up to the bedroom to pack for our holiday. As Nathan walked into the wardrobe and pulled out two expensive suitcases, I could feel a frisson of excitement run through me. He opened up the designer bags and lay them down on the bed.

“Nathan, are you sure we need to leave tomorrow? It’s a bit sudden,” I asked as I finished packing the last of my clothes into one of the bags. I was beginning to feel nervous. But why, I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

“Why wait? You were right, Rose, I do work too hard and I need a break.”

I felt my brow wrinkle. “I’m worried about Charlotte. You really need your family around you at a time like this and her mum lives hours away.”

“I’m sure her mother will come and stay with her and I can organise a nanny to come and help out if she wants. But I think you’re underestimating Charlotte’s abilities. I’m sure she will be a great mum without your help.” Nathan walked over to me and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. “Come on, angel, it’s only for one week. We will be back before you know it.”

I smiled up at him. He was right, Charlotte was going to be a fantastic mother all on her own. A holiday was exactly what we needed and we both could do with some time away from our lives. I was worried that a tropical island holiday sounded a little romantic. Would Nathan expect me to have sex with him? Was that what was causing flurries of butterflies to flap in my stomach?
