“I was upset about the baby, about not getting pregnant. I know you want to have a big family even though you kept telling me that it was okay.”
“I guess, that on top of the phone calls were too much and I’m so sorry. I’ve missed you so much Jakey and I don’t know what I can do to make it up to you.”
“Please tell me what I have to do. You said you were thinking about it, but then you’ve been staying away and I can’t help but think that you’ve already made up your mind and you didn’t choose me.”
“Please give me another chance I promise I’ll do better this time. I won’t ever doubt you again and if you’re happy with me not being able to give you children… well then I guess we can adopt if that’s what you want to do; anything please.”
“Anyway I guess I’ll hear from you when you’re ready. I love you.” I stared at the words long after I’d finished reading before I put the phone away and finished drying off from my shower.
The clock said fiver-thirty by the time I was finished dressing and packing a bag. I left a note for the dog walker who had a key and put some food and water in Max’s bowls before I left.
There was no traffic on the streets this early in the morning and I made good time getting over to her place while it was still relatively dark outside.
I let myself into the darkened house and made my way up the stairs by the waning light coming in through the windows from outside.
In the bedroom I dropped my bag by the door and pulled my shirt off over my head while kicking off my shoes.
I dropped my pants halfway between the door and the bed and by the time I climbed onto the mattress I’d lost my boxers.
