I don’t get to finish the statement before Lynch twists, putting me behind him, at the same time the door opens, and in steps Ezra.

“What are you doing here, Pennington?”Félix demands.

Ezra doesn’t answer him, instead, he looks directly toward Lynch. I see the way his eyes change as I peek from behind Lynch. “Camilla, you made the wrong choice, sweetheart,” he says but holds Lynch’s gaze.

“I told you I don’t belong to anyone. I’m not a possession,” I snap, feeling Lynch tense further in front of me. “There was no choice to be made. I told you it was over, and you wanted to go psycho on me, so I ran from you.”

“No one runs from me,” Ezra warns, then turns his attention to the others in the room. “Félix, I would suggest you and your brothers stay out of this if you don’t want to die as well.”

“I don’t take kindly to threats, Pennington. Your father didn’t scare me and you sure as hell don’t. You might have your backing, but remember one thing, I have my own, and I control this town. You’re nothing in New Orleans.”

“Is that what you think?” Ezra laughs and crosses his arms over his chest. “Trust me when I say you’re in for a rude awakening when you find out.” He sobers and looks toward Lynch again. “You took something important to me, and for that, you will pay. The price is high and I’m finally here to collect.”

“Go ahead and try. You might find yourself just like dear old dad with his throat sliced wide open,” Lynch growls.

“We’ll just see,” Ezra says and backs out the door. Eyes coming to me one last time. “I’ll be seeing you soon, sweetheart.”

I don’t respond or take my gaze from him until he’s out the door, and Lynch turns toward me.

“Start explaining.”

CHAPTER FOUR

LYNCH

The last thing I expected coming to Félix’s office was to have Camilla run in here after we concluded business like her ass was on fire. The last few weeks, I’d been following her around, watching her every move, and planning to talk to her, but not yet doing so.

Now, here she is, and she’s going to explain to me what the fuck is going on between her and fucking Ezra Pennington.

“Sometime today, Cams,” I bark out, more than a little frustrated with her and impatient when it comes to waiting on answers.

Camilla toys with her fingers in front of her. It’s her tell when it comes to letting me know she’s nervous.

“No one here is gonna hurt you, Camilla,” I mutter.

“If they were, they’d have to deal with me, Camilla,” Félix states sternly. “Now, will you please tell us what’s going on here?”

“How about we move this somewhere where she can sit down,” Chains advises.

“My office,” Félix remarks and leads the way back to his office, where his wife is sitting at her little desk they set up in there for her. Everyone knows she helps him with everything he does.

“What’s going on?” Madelaine asks, lifting her gaze from the laptop in front of her.

“That’s what we’re about to find out,” Nicholas answers, leaning against the wall.

My brothers scatter around the room, and I take up position next to Camilla, who sits in one of the chairs that is turned toward the room.

“Start talking, Cams. What the hell happened tonight?”

“Ezra and I were at dinner, and I made the decision to end things with him. He wanted to progress things and I didn’t. When I told him this, he said something nasty about all I had to do was spread my legs . . .” she starts explaining.

It’s all I can do to keep from reacting to this snippet, and I clench my jaw to keep from making an outburst. I brace myself to listen to the rest in order to keep from going after Ezra and killing him right then and there.

“He then proceeded to tell me I belonged to him and that I wasn’t ending things with him. When I informed him otherwise, he made it known that if I didn’t do what he said, he’d go after Lynch and the club and make them pay for Lynch killing his father. I didn’t believe him. So, while we were waiting for his car, I decided to run. I figured if I got to Félix’s office and warned him, he could get the message to you all, and I wouldn’t have to see you. Didn’t realize I’d be running right to you,” she mutters the last part more to herself than the rest of the room.

I know this ‘cause her voice changed to that tone it does when she mumbles to herself.

“Ezra Pennington took over his father’s position, using his father’s power plays to keep hold of what he’s got,” Félix announces what we already know.
