I was surprised anyone talked about me. Especially when it was accurate.

“Where did you hear that?”

“The other girls. They talk. They talk a lot. A rumor gets started and it goes around and around and by the time they’ve heard their own rumor, they start to believe it’s true.”

“I guess some of the rumors might be true,” I said, chewing on a chunk of meat.

“Is that one true?”

I lowered my eyes. Some things were hard to talk about.

Ivy placed a hand on my arm.

“I didn’t mean to pry. Ignore I said anything.”

“You’re not prying. I just… never spoke to anyone about that before. The rumor you heard is true.”

“Then why don’t you leave? If I had the choice, I’d be out of here faster than you can say ‘vanished.’”

I lifted my bowl and downed the last of the soup.

I wiped a hand across my mouth.

“That was delicious. Thank you.”

She offered a warm smile.

“You’re welcome.”

She stood up and began to collect the bowls.

“What are you doing?” I said.

“I need to wash up.”

I snapped out, my hand finding her arm faster than a blink.

“I’ll do it.”

She grimaced at my touch.

When I removed my hand, I saw the red marks I’d made on her skin.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you… I need to watch myself around you. You’re more delicate than I’m used to.”

“It’s okay.”

“No,” I said, raising her chin to look at me. “It’s not. I promise I’ll never hurt you again.”

The fire in her eyes ignited another in mine.

I wanted her. Now.

She surprised me when she took me by the hand and led me toward the bed.

“There’s one place you can hurt me as much as you want, and it won’t be painful, it will feel good.”

She took her T-shirt off and let it slide to the floor.
