He’s in the mafia.

His life is woven into all things illegal and looked down upon by society.

He’s probably killed a man. Or many.

He runs Atlantic City with his cousin, and there’s no way they can do that without getting their hands dirty.

I have to be the one to decide if I can live with that.

Parking around the back of the building, I sit there for a moment and take a deep breath. I’m overthinking this. I just had a blissful night with him – the best I’ve ever had – and here I am, ruining it with all the what ifs and negative possibilities that might never be.

I need to just live in the moment and take whatever Vinny and I are day by day.

A knock on my window startles me out of my thoughts and Vinny opens my door for me. “You okay?”

“Yes. I was just thinking.”

“About me?”

“Yes, actually,” I admit.

“Can I ask what about?”

I give him a small smile. “No, you cannot.”

“Alright. But you know, one day you’re going to share what’s going on in that gorgeous head of yours with me.”

“Am I?”

“Yes, you are.”

Placing my hand on his shoulder, I lift up on my toes and give him a soft kiss. “I’ll tell you that one of my thoughts was how last night was the best of my life. Everything about it was perfect.”

“For me, too.”

“Really?”

“Yes, dolcezza. It may surprise you, but I’m not a heartless man. And last night, I felt it all with you. I’m glad you did, too.”

“I know you’re not heartless,” I tell him, placing my other hand over his heart to feel it beating strongly under my palm.

Vinny kisses me long and slow, and I forget where we are for a minute. “Let’s go inside before I toss you in my car and take you back to my place.”

“Oh, right, inside. Yes.”

My flustered answer has Vinny grinning from ear to ear, and I huff out a lungful of air, needing to regain my composure to be around my nonno and not give away the fact that Vinny spent the night fucking me like he owned me.

Vinny holds the back door open for me and I hear nonno puttering in the kitchen. “Hey, nonno!” I yell out, and he pops his head out from the kitchen.

“Good morning, my dear. Oh, Vincenzo, good morning to you, too,” he adds, coming out to shake his hand.

“Good morning, Frank. Lexi told me you’re packaging up food for the shelter, and I’m here to help any way I can.”

“I won’t turn away the help. Alexis already does too much for me.”

“Nonno, you know I don’t mind helping.”

“I know, but now you don’t have to lift anything heavy today.”
