“What choice did I have, Nick?” I slam my finger into his chest that feels like a plate of steel.

“I didn’t want to be with a mafia man then, and I damn sure don’t want to be with one now.”

“Remember, you’re marrying me to save a life,” he reminds me.

“Hopefully, I survive long enough to find a cure for her,” I say before storming up the paved walkway like I’d ever been to his home.

The butler stands blocking the entrance, hands cupped in front of him.

I had been head over heels in love with Nick. That love faded over time. The bitterness is back. I’m not sure how to push it down. Did I walk away from Nick because he’s in the mafia? Yes. His crime business played a part, but something much bigger made me stay away permanently.

“Good afternoon, Ms. Levon. My name is Wendall. I am the head butler. Welcome to the Pitucco estate.”

“Nice to meet you, Wendall. Please call me Kinsley. After all, I’ll be here for the next five years.”

He coughs. “Five years?”

I narrow my eyes. “Yes.”

Nick places a hand on the small of my back. His touch sends heat straight to my core. I hate he still has that effect on me after all these years.

“Let her settle in,” Nick says.

Wendall steps aside and Nick guides me through the door. The monstrous atrium takes me by surprise.

“I’ve lived here for seven years. It’s probably time for an update. Redecorate if you’d like. This is your home now.” He smiles.

My eyes move over his face. Under the skylights in the cathedral ceilings, I notice the bags under his eyes.

Don’t feel sorry for him, Kinsley.

“After I find a cure for my mother, maybe I’ll redecorate.”

He extends his hand towards me. "I have a few more people for you to meet," he says, leading me into the sitting room.

An older woman with a chocolate-colored poodle greets me warmly with a smile. "You must be Kinsley." She steps forward and kisses both of my cheeks.

"Kinsley, this is my mother, Azzura Pitucco."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Pitucco."

"The pleasure is mine, dear." She steps back and carefully observes Nick and I.

That’s interesting.

"Nico, I'd like you to meet my fiancée, Kinsley," Nick introduces us.

"Kinsley, this is my younger brother."

"You two look alike, but Nico definitely got the better genes," I tease.

A wry smile lifts Nico’s lips and his brown eyes sparkle. “I like her, Nick.”

"She's just trying to get under my skin," Nick grumbles.

"And last but not least, this is my sister, Natalia."

She gives me a friendly smile. “Nice to meet you.”
