I disconnected the call.

Kennedy wiggled her way onto my lap, planted her palms on my broad chest, and pushed my body until my back hit the pillow. Her long, beautiful, tousled hair cascaded over her shoulders. I brought a hand up, toying with the ends of her hair.

“What did he say?” Kennedy’s eyes held worry.

“That you’d run, because that’s what you do,” I breathed, trying to calm down.

She peered into my green eyes.

“He’s jealous. And hurt. He’s more so angry with himself. He couldn’t keep me.” Her smile widened.

“I’m not going anywhere, Franco. What you and I have is different. You treat me special. You’ve done so since I first arrived. The racks of clothes were the first small gesture. Next was the vegan food. You didn’t have to go to such lengths. I love how you make me feel.” Her lips crushed mine. “Tell me you believe what I’m saying to you.”

“Wholeheartedly, I believe you, Kennedy. What we have is special. I won’t allow people to taint what we have.” I pulled her into my arms, squeezing her tight.

I sincerely believed what I said. Even though Kennedy and I were moving fast, I knew I loved her, and she loved me. Kennedy wasn’t going anywhere. My cocky, obsessive ass wouldn’t let her.

A smile curled my lips as I thought about the present day. Gripping Kennedy’s hand, I brought it to my lips. She turned her gaze from the window to me. A smirk teetered on her lips. The trip to Texas was taking its toll on her.

“Talk to me, sweetheart.”

She glanced between Clip and Saro. Clip peeked out the side mirror several times as he barreled down the road toward the private airport. The stern expression on Saro’s face said he was ready for trouble. His gloved hands curled around an AR-fifteen in his lap. My team and I were on high alert. I wouldn’t take any chances with Kennedy’s life, mine, or my team. Kennedy and were getting married soon. I was determined to see it through. Have a happy life like my parents had. Peter and Mom knew each other most of their lives. Maybe she saw him more as a friend. I didn’t know. But the way her eyes lit up when Dad came home. That was love. He held her face in his big palms and stared at her for like a full minute before crushing her lips. Yeah, Dad definitely loved Mom. Women often tried to get his attention, but it didn’t work. He only had eyes for Mom.

I was ready for whatever Spitfire would send my way. The next time she said something smart, I’d fuck her good until she fell apart in my arms. Then I’d tell her to repeat her brash words. My dick would turn into a steel rod, and I’d fuck her beautiful ass again.

Let’s face it. I’m a sucker for her sharp tongue.

Kennedy’s Jack Daniel colored doe eyes met mine, driving me insane. All I wanted to do was take the pain away. Calling my friend Roy, who was in the Army, crossed my mind. He flew drones for a living. If I asked him to drop a bomb on Kennedy’s father’s mansion, he’d do it. Unfortunately, I promised my woman I’d stand down. That was a first. Hey, what could I say? I was trying to be the supportive boyfriend.

“Nothing,” she lied, slicking a hand over her sleek brown ponytail that hung down the middle of her back.

“Franco, I look forward to showing you around San Antonio.”

“I can’t wait, sweetheart. Sit next to me.” My palm patted the orange leather seat.

She did as she was told. I tugged the seatbelt across her body.

“We’re stopping in Houston first.”

Her eyes widened. “Why?”

“I have to take care of a little business.”

She nodded.

Hooking an arm around her neck, I pressed my lips against her ear. “We won’t hide things from each other. I want to know what’s on your mind.”

Kennedy grabbed my free hand and caressed her thigh with it.

My lips lifted against her ear. “Keep a smile on that gorgeous face. Do you understand?”

“Yes,” she breathed.

“Do you want my fingers to slide up your dress, push your panties aside, and play with your pussy?”

“Please,” she begged.

This was the second time Kennedy’s behavior alarmed me.
