Dumping all my bills and tickets into my bucket, I rose to my feet.

I followed closely behind Bonnie. Ettore was on our heels. Bonnie scanned a card over a keypad next to a steel door.

We were waiting in Franco’s office or leaving the building.

We hustled down a long hallway, then we dipped through another door. What the hell was going on?

Bonnie ran toward the back of an office and placed her hand on a wall. The wall slid open.

“We have company outside the club,” Bonnie stated as she slung AR-fifteens over her shoulders.

“Shit! Duke’s men must’ve notified his team.”

She shook her head. “No. It’s Lungy’s men.”

“That bastard Derwin told that asshole, anyway. I’m definitely nailing that fucker's balls to his bed.”

Ettore grabbed two AK-Forty-sevens and ammo.

I gestured my hands, waving toward myself. “Give me an AR-fifteen. I’m a sharpshooter. I can knock over a few of the men the second we get outside.”

“No, Kennedy. I can’t do that. You are being held captive by my boss. My first responsibility is to keep him safe. Yes, you and I get along, but I don’t know you that well. You and Quinn could conspire against my boss and kill him.”

My eyes widened and my lips parted. Shit, they had no idea I helped torture Derwin. They probably just thought I watched Franco cut him up.

“I wouldn’t do that. But I understand. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn’t trust me either. I was a queen pin. My men would die to protect me, too. And they’d never trust me in this situation. I’ll stay close behind you, Bonnie. The second I feel like my life is in danger, I’ll find a way to survive. All I want to do is help Quinn clear his name. I’m ready to roll.”

I whipped off my shoes as Bonnie closed the weapons room. In a fluent line, we inched toward a secret exit. Bonnie peeked down the hallway before opening the door. There was a stairway leading to another exit.

Bonnie approached the door, then glanced behind me at Ettore.

“Let me take the lead, Bonnie,” he huffed.

She lifted her head high. “No, I can do this.”

“Honey, I know you can,” Ettore cooed.

Her eyes widened. “Ettore,” she growled.

“Kennedy doesn’t care about our imaginary relationship. Isn’t that right, Kennedy?”

My brows pinched together as I met his gaze. “No, I don’t.”

“We haven’t told Franco yet. He has too much going on. I’m afraid if we tell Franco we’re married, he’ll separate us. I enjoy working with my husband.”

“Oh, in that case, I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I winked at Bonnie, then Ettore.

Who was I to stand in the way of love? At least someone got their true love story. Even if they lived their life on the edge protecting their mafia boss. I knew in their line of work they’d take a bullet for the Capo.

Bonnie held up a hand, then counted down to zero. She opened the door, leading us outside. My heart banged in my chest like a baseball meeting a bat before a home run. I hated not having my weapons. After my breakup with Duke, I carried my Glocks and knives every day. Then I just stopped carrying them all together once I realized he wasn’t coming for me. This moment sent bile rising in my throat. I was unarmed and had to rely on two strangers to protect me. The wind whipped through my body as I stepped out of the door.

“Stay close, Kennedy,” Bonnie said before running toward the SUV she drove earlier.

The flood lights that were on when we arrived weren’t on now. Franco’s men probably turned them off. Smart thinking.

My feet pounded the pavement. It felt like my heartbeat slammed through every nerve ending in my body.

“There she is!” a man shouted from a parked SUV near the door.
