My fingers squeezed the fork handle. I wanted to bend the metal in half. If I did, she’d think I had a short temper. It seemed my temper flared when it came to her.

Fuck! I had to shoot something. Later, I’d go downstairs to the shooting range and fire some rounds.

“He didn’t want to lose me. And I liked being with him outside of the rough sex. So I told him to fuck other women.”

Kennedy’s eyes met mine.

“What?” I yelled.

She should’ve dumped him.

“I guess you could say we were happy. Duke said I should quit my job and move in with him. But I couldn’t do that. How could I live with a man I was afraid to have sex with?” Kennedy pushed the food around the plate with her fork.

“Duke didn’t want the other women. He wanted our rough sex life to continue. But I was afraid he’d accidentally kill me while we were having sex.”

Kennedy leaned back in her chair. Her chest rose and fell. “I disappeared for a few days. To clear my head. When I returned home, Duke was waiting in my apartment. I told Duke we were over. He didn’t take it so well. He went on a rant about how he wanted to marry me after I graduated from college. I told Duke the violent sex was something I couldn’t stomach ever again.” She ran a shaky hand over her neck.

“I told him we were over. He said I belonged to him and no one else could have me. A woman should never think about murdering a man to get away from him. That’s when I knew he wouldn’t let me go. So I called in a favor. Asked my uncle to talk to Duke. Get him to understand I was off limits. My uncle did. He persuaded a supplier to back out on a lucrative deal with Duke. My uncle told Duke he could get it back for him, but he’d have to leave me alone. Duke finally agreed. Of course, I had to complete a major drug deal for my uncle in return. You know, since I didn’t want my father involved in my life anymore. My uncle and father were like one and the same. The drug deal was dangerous. The buyer didn’t want to pay for the merchandise, so he tried stealing the drugs. Even though I was shot in the process, I made them pay. I can be very lethal when pushed. After I handled that situation, I returned to school. If I hadn’t involved my uncle, I would’ve uprooted my life to get away from Duke. I didn’t want to do that.”

She was beautiful and badass. My cock was so hard at that moment I thought it would burst the seams of my slacks. Together, she and I could rule Portland.

No, Franco. She doesn’t want this life anymore.

“If you were into relationships, what would your ideal man look like?”

A smile tugged at the ends of her lips. “He would be a nerd. His biggest vice would be sports. He’d love to watch movies and cuddle with me on the sofa.”

“What about your sex life?” I asked, bringing the glass of whiskey to my lips.

“We wouldn’t have sex in the missionary position. He’d understand after the trauma I’d gone through.”

“I’d like to show you something.” I stood and stretched my hand out for hers.

Her brows wrinkled. “Where are we going?”

Kennedy placed her hand in mine. I led her out of the dining room.

She halted in the sitting room. “Who plays the piano?”

“No one,” I lied. “It’s for show.”

We continued down a long hallway. I flipped on the lights as we entered the study.

Her eyes roved the colorful spines of the books gracing the bookshelves along the extensive wall.

Kennedy gasped. “Your study is beautiful.”

“Thank you. This was my father’s study. And before his it was my grandfathers.”

“This is your family’s home?”

“Yes.”

“The mansion looks brand new,” she stated.

“After my parents died, I had the entire house remodeled. Basically, the home had been rebuilt. The only room I kept the same was this one. Other than a new ceiling, floors, and fresh paint, this room is stuck in the nineteen twenties era. I promised to keep this room in pristine condition.”

Kennedy squeezed my hand tighter. “Sorry to hear that you lost your parents.”
