“Nice.” She bit into an asparagus stalk.

“The only thing I miss about my previous life is the lifestyle. Growing up, I had everything. But I’d give it up every time to stay away from my father.”

I sat back in my chair. Anger coursed through my veins. “He forced you to sell drugs?”

“Yes. My father’s a notorious kingpin. I don’t have a relationship with him anymore.”

“Good. Sounds toxic. I thought I’d have to teach him a lesson.”

She smiled. “Thanks for saying that.”

“I wasn’t just saying that Kennedy, I mean it.”

Our eyes locked. Something passed between us.

“Do you enjoy being single?” She asked, changing the subject.

“Yes, there isn’t a woman strong enough to weather my darkness.”

“Is that so? I doubt your darkness is darker than mine.”

“We can compare our level of darkness another day.”

Kennedy laughed. “Yeah, I think today was crazy enough.”

“It’s been a crazy week. Someone tried to kill me the other day.”

Her eyes widened. “What?”

“Yeah, but I took care of them. I’m searching for the person who ordered the hit.”

“Franco, I hope you find the asshole soon.”

“I will,” I stated, shoving a sliver of filet mignon into my mouth.

“Your stay isn’t all bad, right?”

Holding the glass of wine close to her lips, she smirked. “Franco, let’s see, I’m being held captive by a dangerous mafia man in the other wing of his mansion.”

A chuckle rumbled in my chest. “I don’t think I scare you. And that’s a first. Many people look away when I enter a room.”

“This life isn’t new to me, so maybe that’s why I’m not terrified. If I wanted to kill you, I could.”

“Is that so? Good to know.”

It seemed I kidnapped a drug cartel princess. What would daddy do if he learned I had his daughter? I was tempted to rock the boat just so I could kill her father for forcing her to sell drugs. He didn’t let her enjoy her young adult life. Even I attended college. The point was, I had a choice. She didn’t.

“How long did you date Duke?” The words felt bitter on my tongue. Knowing he had her first or had her at all made my blood boil.

I hated the thought of him having a beautiful woman like her. If I wasn’t so fucked up, she’d be mine.

What are you saying, Franco? She’s here because of a debt owed.

“Too long.” She rubbed at her forehead nervously. “I met him at a restaurant I worked at a couple of years ago. He was charming and persistent.” Kennedy paused and gulped down half of her mixed drink.

“We took things slow. Three months into our relationship, we had sex. That’s when things took a dark turn. I found out I like having a man’s hands wrapped around my neck during sex.” An uncomfortable smile lifted her lips.

“His hands curled around my neck, then tightened. He squeezed tighter. I grabbed at his hands, but he didn’t let up. I heard someone ask if I could hear them. When I opened my eyes, a doctor flashed a light in my eyes. Duke was in the background, pacing the floor in his boxers. The second the doctor said I’d be ok, Duke gathered me in his arms and held me for what felt like forever. He was in love with me.”
