The back of her gloved hand flew across his cheek. The whack hung in the air.

“Shut the fuck up!” she roared.

He rubbed at his red jaw with his uninjured hand. “I didn’t know your daddy wasn’t into mixed marriages. When I told him I planned to marry you, he shut me down quick.”

Duke met my gaze. “How did you get his blessing to marry his queen pin daughter?”

“I didn’t. Kennedy explained he’d never give his blessing for her hand in marriage. So, I asked her to marry me. She said yes, then I whisked her off to her home town and married her.”

Duke laughed. “You’re such an arrogant bastard.”

He peeked at Kennedy. “You left one monster only to fall in the bed of another?”

“Franco is a monster. Just not to me. He’d never get off on watching the light fizzle in my eyes. I’m with the right man. And.” She lifted a finger.

“My father can no longer control me.” Kennedy stared at him through her long lashes. “Quinn and I killed our fathers. I took the throne. I’m now the San Antonio queen pin of the Carter Empire. The black mafia, motherfucker.”

Duke’s smile dropped, and he visibly swallowed.

She crouched beside him. “Did you really think you’d control me?”

He didn’t say a word. It was like he could feel her power rolling off of her.

“Duke, I’ve never seen you speechless,” she said, standing to her full height of five-five.

“My husband and I now run Portland, Salem, and Hillsboro. We’ll give Orazio Bend and part of Salem. The DeLucas’ just keep expanding their territories.”

Duke met my gaze. “You let her be a part of your empire?” He pointed at Kennedy.

My brows lowered. “She’s my wife. Of course, I did. And for the record. No one let’s Kennedy do anything. She’s her own woman. Kennedy showed me I could love. This woman.” I gestured to her.

“Is my queen. No one will ever disrespect her. You’ll pay for that snide remark you made about choking her. You fucking bastard.”

I smoothed a hand over Kennedy’s back. “Do with him as you wish. But leave something for me.”

Her face lit up. “You are the best husband ever,” she cooed.

“I get my revenge.” Tears clung to her lashes.

My heart hit the floor. I didn’t realize how traumatized she was because of the choking incidents.

It took everything in me not to stab that bastard in the neck. After removing my glove, I slid the pad of my thumb over her cheeks.

“Kennedy, I love you so much.”

She sniffled. “And I love you, Franco.”

Kennedy placed her rifle in my hand. “I won’t need this.”

She pulled two switchblades out of the side pocket on her cargo pants.

“Duke, start running,” Kennedy ordered.

His eyes widened. “What?”

“Now!” she roared.

He scrambled to his feet in his expensive gray cashmere coat over the gray suit. Duke sprinted through the trees. Kennedy tossed each knife. He peeked over his shoulder at the wrong time. The first knife met the side of his nose.
