We rode wave after wave that day. The exhaustion hit us hard. We slept in the next morning.

Vicky and I sat on the patio drinking our alcoholic beverages. I sipped beer, she sipped red wine.

“Zander, do you still plan to double major?”

“Shit. Yeah. After I was released from the hospital my father was home every day. He crowded me. Kissing my head, telling me how much he loved me and how he wouldn’t forgive himself if something happened to me.

He and I played a little baseball. We hadn’t done that since I was little. He was never into sports, but for the first time he understood how important sports were to me.”

She grinned. “I am happy you and your dad are getting along.”

“Yeah.” I shrugged.

“Are you playing football freshman year?”

“Yup.”

“Maybe your parents will come to some of your games. I’m sure my parents will. They love you like you are their son.” She smiled against the rim of her glass.

“I know they would. I love them too. Because of them I’m not a total asshole.”

She laughed. Her high ponytail shook.

Glancing at my watch, I chugged my beer. “We better get going. Our skydiving time slot is approaching.”

“Let’s move.”

Later that evening, I sat in the open kitchen and searched for the Vicky playlist on my cell. “Vicky, join me on the beach,” I shouted.

Stepping outside, I inhaled the fresh air. The sky was filled with stars. It was a perfect night to spend alone with Vicky.

“I’m coming.” I heard her run down the glass steps.

She grabbed my hand, stepping at my side. Vicky was dressed in a white strappy short sundress. Simple and perfect. Her brown locks were piled on her head in a messy bun. Fuck, she drove me wild. Did you ever know deep down in your heart there was only one person who could truly make you happy? Vicky was my forever.

I pressed play on my cell. The slow ballad surrounded us. Leading her deeper onto the beach, I pulled her into my arms. Our feet lingered in the warm sand. Her head rested under my chin.

“This is perfect, Vicky.”

“It is, Zander.”

“This could be us every day,” I breathed into her hair.

“Zander, sounds perfect. I love being here with you.”

Being here with me. Not every day. Didn’t matter I knew she desired every day.

We swayed on the desolate beach for almost an hour. No meaningful conversation, just holding each other. Living in the moment. Our special moment.

The remainder of our vacation we rose early and surfed. No better way to watch the sunrise than with someone you love. Our slow dancing continued almost every night. That was how we ended our evening before retiring to the bedroom to make love. Holding her in my arms every day made life so fucking bittersweet.

We made love in every room of the house. We ran through a few boxes of condoms in a month’s time.

I stared out into the ocean. Her hands swept along my waist and her lips melted against my back.

“Dinner was nice. I think you enjoy cooking for me.”
