CHAPTER NINE

VICTORIA

I stood under the hot shower water, dancing on my skin. A smile curled my lips. It was time I ventured out. Went for a night on the town.

Fifteen minutes later, I stood in the stark white, airy bedroom master closet, rummaging through Alissa’s clothes. Lucky for me she insisted her stylist update her wardrobe every fall. She always wore the latest fashions. I’ll keep a few of these summer pieces, before her stylist returned in a couple of months and gave away these beautiful clothes.

The door bell chimed. Who could that be? The grocery service delivered food yesterday. Shit, I remembered who it was. A young surfer guy who lived further up the beach asked if I’d go surfing with him. I told him I’d think about it. Clearly, he chose to test his luck. You never wanted to test your luck with me. I tossed a loose pink blouse over my head and slipped into a pair of jean shorts.

“Coming,” I yelled.

My bare feet padded across the black slate tile floor.

I swung the door open, clenching my eyes shut, holding the bridge of my nose. “If I’m not mistaken, I said I’d think about it.”

Silence.

One eye opened, then the other. My mouth was the last to drop.

“Hello, Vicky.”

“How did you find me?”

“Are you going to let me in?”

I stepped back.

His delicious distinctive cologne I bought for him shot up my nose.

“Answer the question, Zander?”

“Alissa.” He walked deeper into the house. His long dark disheveled curls hung over his shoulders. Fuck, he was beautiful. The gruffy beard he sported appeared unkept. Didn’t take away from his sexiness. Made him edgy. He released the black duffel bag off his shoulder, thudding the floor.

“She wasn’t supposed to tell anyone where I was.”

“I confessed my love for you. And I told Alissa I’d keep showing up at her golf games, tennis matches, shoe shopping trips, you name it, I’d be there until she gave up your location. No one else knows where we are.” He turned to me dressed in his grunge khaki shorts, yellow T-shirt, and flip flops.

“Stop saying you love me. You don’t love me. Maybe like a childhood friend.”

He closed the space between us. Zander slipped my brown curly locks behind my ear. His large hands gripped my face, shoving his tongue past my lips. Our tongues danced, fighting to lead. My finger nails dug into his forearms.

I pushed him back. “We can’t be together. You and Hayden may not be friends anymore, but he’s still my brother.”

He pulled me close and his head dropped upon mine. “Then I’ll give you what you want right now. But I’d like us to spend the rest of the summer together. We’ll go our separate ways at the end of August. You’ll date other people and so will I.”

Zander pulled me up into his big strong arms. “Which way to the bedroom?”

“Up the stairs to your right.” I dropped my head on his shoulder and caressed his back.

I no longer desired to be fucked. Making love was what I wanted with him and only him.

Zander laid me on the bed and his tongue slid along my neck. His hand cupped my breasts.

“My brother was right; I would break your heart.”

He leaned on his forearm. His sad eyes stared into mine. “You already have. The second you walked out of the hospital room and disappeared. You ripped my heart out of my chest, Vicky.”

My fingers fell over the spot on his forehead where he’d been hit. “Sex won’t help it hurt any less.”
