“Oh, shit. How long was I lying here?”

“A few hours,” she smiled. “I tried waiting as long as I could before I woke you. I need to take Mr. Marshalls vitals.”

“Yes, of course.” I stood briefly, then sat in the reclining chair.

The nurse peeked at me while she monitored Zander’s heart. “Your boyfriend will make a full recovery.” Her brown face brightened.

My smile rose and fell. “He isn’t my boyfriend. He wants to be. He’s just a family friend. Please don’t mention to our families you saw me sleeping with him.”

Her smile dropped. “Ok.” She pushed her cart toward the door. “One more thing.” The nurse turned to me. “Don’t allow someone else to steal your happiness.” She smiled. “Have a good day.” She disappeared out the door.

I pondered on her words. My happiness. No one cared about my happiness other than Zander. The door opened.

“Good morning, Vicky.”

Hayden walked across the room and stood at Zander’s side.

“I don’t want to fight. I-I just want to make sure he’s all right. When he wakes up, I’ll leave.” The tears threatened to burst forth. I managed to choke them down.

“What’s going…on?”

Our eyes darted to Zander.

I hopped to my feet. “You’re awake!” This time, the tears streamed down my heated cheeks.

Zander gripped his head.

“Good to see you are awake, bro. Sorry to do this, Zander. I saw you kiss my sister the other night. Vicky’s never giddy. But she’s been giddy lately. You two have met in several secret places. Last night I followed Vicky to your event, I planned to confront both of you. We’ve been best friends since we were kids. We can’t allow Vicky to tear us apart. Trust me she will. Once she’s bored with you, she’ll dump you. And you won’t come around anymore, because you don’t want to bump into her. So, I am telling you both I forbid you to see each other.”

He slipped his fingers through his dark hair that dangled in his face, slapping it back in place.

Zander’s head rested on the pillow. He stared into the distance.

“I won’t give her up, Hayden.”

“Zander, you’ve lost your mind. She will destroy you. Vicky is fucking venom.” My brother’s cold eyes burned through me.

My fingers intertwined with Zander’s. “He’s right. I’m venom.” I stared into his tranquil blue eyes.

“I’m no good for you.” My voice broke, and the tears flowed.

“Even though we said we’d end our time together at the end of this summer and go on with our lives. We both know you wouldn’t be able to let me go. So, I’ll do it.” My forehead creased, my lips twisted, and my body vibrated. “Goodbye, Zander.”

He held my hand tighter. “No, this was our time.” His sad eyes gazed into mine.

“You were falling in love with me.”

Truth was I’d fallen in love with him a long time ago. I never admitted that truth to anyone.

“Zander, I’m leaving for the remainder of the summer.” I snatched my hand away and walked toward the door.

“Vicky, don’t leave. Hayden, get the fuck out! Our friendship is over!” Zander roared.

The nurses ran past me as I exited the room.

“Vicky! Vicky!” my mother yelled at my back as I walked down the hall.
