I couldn’t wait to find out what he would do to me.

With that thought, I headed out the door to the new chapter in my life.

AESON

My mate was quiet the entire ride to the moon.

I didn’t seek her thoughts as I was too lost in my own.

I had spent the time reviewing the medical documents she had forwarded to me. To fulfill the doctor’s orders would be a significant task, but when I read what the problem was, I understood why. My mate’s brain chemistry was not in balance. She was relying on a substance to keep herself functioning, but that same substance was exacerbating her problem and causing new ones.

After reading that, I felt upset with myself.

I was aware that the Earth humans had limited technological development, but to realize that their medical practices were still based on experimentation driven by corporate profits was unnerving. My mate had done everything right in taking care of herself; she had just relied on the guidance of someone who helped her in the wrong way. She was an assertive woman, but no matter how strong an individual is, they can easily be led astray by another person who has incorporated bad information into their own personal reality.

These humans were communal creatures who relied on each other in their evolutionary development, but they had a flaw that was impossible to ignore.

I had spent some time reading up on Earth. It was required to join the Mate Matching program but at the same time, I had the deep desire to learn as much as possible so that I could understand my mate, so that I could better serve her needs and be the idea first male for her.

These humans were so strangely delicate, so ready to be a part of something greater, so willing to work together to create their cities, infrastructure, and societies, yet they couldn’t come to an agreed consensus about how to do that. Instead of the mentally fit ruling, they were ruled by deception and trickery. They were ruled by the perceived options of their own society, and most would compress themselves to be less than what they really were. They were funneled into roles they may or may not be suited for, forced to work jobs that didn’t ring true to their hearts.

No wonder the Norratar were pouring so many resources into this planet.

Given the support to be their true selves, these humans had massive untapped potential. Just hearing about how the empress of the Norratar had thrown herself into the project of conquering her own home planet was an inspiration.

When given access to functional tools and resources, she blossomed.

A certainty rushed through me.

I would help my mate blossom. I would help her achieve any goal, fulfill any dream.

But first I needed to rectify a mistake I had made, the knowledge of which had crept into my mind when I saw my mate’s reaction to my fight with the Norratar soldiers. The way she had reacted was different than an Atisari female. She hadn’t critiqued me, finding flaws in my fighting.

She was not an Atisari female and I had treated her like one when we met.

I had insisted we complete our mating as soon as possible, to show her acceptance of me as a mate without leading me on.

That had not been the right thing to do.

It had been a request built upon my own desire to be a first male, to not be led on by a female wanting to test the waters. It was something the females in my own culture did, stringing males along and then rejecting them after insisting they battle the entirety of their existing harem. It was a cruel thing to do.

But humans didn’t have mate battles.

The certainty of my mistake had fully hit me when I had been reading through the doctor’s instructions. She was a different species with different needs, something I’d known before but hadn’t fully incorporated until faced with the reality of our partnership. She needed something truly unique, and I couldn’t give that to her if I was insisting she take me before she was ready.

She needed me to scare her.

Not a small amount either. The doctor’s notes detailed the need for an extreme scare coinciding with the application of her new medicine. It had to be sustained and to a level where she could genuinely believe that her life was at risk.

I had to utterly terrify my new mate.

And the worst part about it… it sounded like fun.
